This guy sells good looking repros on ebay. Otherwise I have some used original ones which are standard cut but are more expensive.

I suggest you get the plastic casing from a ball point pen and file the 16 combinations until you find the right one or get John or Ian to make one for you.

If the bow is stamped A then that corresponds to a standard N key (the most common).

These are 2 sets of Model 94s, connected with a chain. They look like they were made this way at the factory. A while back, somebody told me they were possibly made for high security transport... I guess we'll see.

I also thought of taking modelling clay or chewing gum and gently mashing it into the keyhole to try and get the key image.

The L key has cuts at 4:30 and 7:30 with the slot up at 12:00 No need to go sticking bubble gum in a 94 keyhole!!!

Well if your cuffs are truly an L key, that was a restricted pattern. Your best bet is to buy a key off of someone like Ian or perhaps John Bushey. Thats probably a better bet than going to a locksmith

I have another idea. If these cuffs are restricted, should I send them to the key supplier (In the US, due to shipping costs) and let them match it up? That might be ultimately cheaper than ordering the wrong keys multiple times.

Hi Jens, are you holding the key and looking at it pointing away from your eye ? Don't read the key by looking at the tip straight on.

What I find most interesting is that #15 has no cut/s whatsoever.
This should reduce security substantially, and I'm frankly befuddled by this configuration.

Hi Jason, I made up the chart to show all the permutations of a 4 pin tumbler, two depth cylinder as used in the S&W 94.

The chart is all possible combinations but not all the combinations were used or would want to be used. Number 15 and 16 are combinations which if they existed would have the weakest security and the 15 key would also operate the 16.

Only those which have a letter associated with them are current known to exist and I thank collector Joe Fox for many of them from his own collection.

One might also say about that chart, if looking into the cuff keyhole, the white "uncut" marks are the pins that must be pushed.

Put the chart in photoshop and re-do the opposite so if you have a key blank in the vise its easier to determine where to file... ie mirror image

Could who ever posted the reverse chart remove it.
In the profession of locksmithing keys of this nature are always read in the direction that the keyhole would also be seen.

If you were to pick the lock of a S&W 94 cuff and then look at the tumblers to work out the combination, the correct and correctly read chart would allow you to work out the key letter and combination.

Modifing my chart because you don't know how to read it is an insult to my assistance. I won't be posting picture to help in the future.

I am glad I saved the reversed chart before it was deleted. Very handy for checking those extra keys. I for one appreciated it greatly.

I do however understand having multiple charts around could present problems, but it was presented for what is was, and was clearly marked.

Perhaps more effort should be made to end some of the stupid bickering and name calling that happens on a all to regular basis on this forum, instead of wasting time and effort deleting good posts.

Do the Model 94 cuffs have multiple pin heights when the key chart refers to a cut vs no cut?

What is the best method to picking them to determine the key type? I have tried a bic pen tube with the proper cut outs but it doesnt seem to work.

Oh, yes, the irony of the ball point pen barrel. Potentially a great cuff if not for an unfortunate size coincidence. The same could be said of a standard cuff and the old ball point pin ink cartridges back when they were made of metal. I have several pairs of 94s that I have won over the years from ebay and 2 of them refuse to smoothly open with one of my keys no matter how much I clean and lube them (all my keys are N pattern.) You can 'work' the key and get them to open but it is troublesome. I first thought the springs behind the pins were shot but now I am thinking that perhaps they aren't the 'N' type lock. I have heard of other pin patterns for so called restricted models but now that I see the chart I am going to have to dig those things up and examine them again. Thank you Ian!

Did anybody notice the lockcase is one piece of heavy steel folded over from the hinge pin to the hinge pin? Strong!

I have found that the tolerances to be in the 1/1000 of an inch range for the pins.

The connecting chain is of the type used by S&W and Peerless on their leg irons.

If as you stated only 1 pair has a serial number, it may be that this was part of a special order from S&W. (who knows for sure) ?
