#2As far as I know, circa 1912 for The Peerless Handcuff Company. Peerless had recently acquired the Carney swing-thru patent.

#5One could say that they "got into the business" when Peerless contracted them to manufacture the Carney design. Smith & Wesson created their exclusive line of cuffs in the 1950's, as the war effort kept them busy producing firearms previously.
