Thank you for that. It is indeed an interesting article. Just out of curiosity, what "unusual handcuffs" were you refering to? I looked at the article and maybe I missed something, but the majority of the cuffs, (if not all), are fairly normal and in fact are featured on this very site. Sorry, about that Steve, by unusual I did not mean any bastard cuffs or the like, merely ones like the bottleneck (which I have yet to own myself) and those oversise Clejuso cuffs, which I consider more unusual looking than the norm. I believe (my copy of the magazine is not at hand) that the repro Daily mirror cuff is there as well, not the sort of thing you see at the local army surplus outfit!

Being a guy who has collected for more than 20 years, and yourself also being a collector, you can only imagine and certainly understand my interest at the possibility of getting to glimpse some rare and seldom seen manacle or manacles I may not have witnessed before. So, having read the article and having looked at the pictures, and then going on to read your post here, I was understandably interested and wondered if I had not missed something really special or unique. Alas, such was not the case. Granted, many beginning and even other collectors may not have some of items Dean is pictured with and so they may enjoy having a peek at the pictures in the article. So much less galling than seeing and drooling over rare itmes on Ebay that shoot through the moon price wise! Regards, Steve

I recently picked up the booklet: How to Make Your Own Trick Handcuffs (And Use Them)by John Novak as part of the new EARL collection.

I have yet to read it but went to the section that had pictures of the Frank Reno collection. The cuff list in the back of the book named MANY cuffs I've never heard of however the photos are VERY poor and is hard to make some of them out. There may be ones in there that are of interest to you Steve if you have not seen the booklet yet.

Bruce there is a recent article on Thomas Soloman in the new magic magazine. They don't talk about handcuffs but it may be an article you would be interested in.

Thanks Joe and Bruce for the mention of “The Heat” article. The article wasn’t necessary intended for handcuff collector’s but for the Canadian Entertainment industry. They were more interested in fashion then handcuffs . They wanted me to wear this $1,000 suit on for the cover. That was fine, but I wanted some handcuffs and chain to be locked up in. I down sized what I wanted to be locked up in so they could show the suit. I spent several days with them doing an interview and photo shoot and you have no control of the out come. They leave more out then what is in. Just like that last Houdini TV show I worked on, you just don‘t know what the end product is until every one else sees it.

Anyway I know none of the Handcuffs in the photo’s are earth shattering but thought I would give a little insight to a few that might be of inertest to some. I have known Bruce Thompson for over 20 years and we have watched each others collection grow over that time from the first ones we each acquired. He knows I love handcuffs that tell a story which may make them unique in some way. Because of the target audience I went with more “shinny cuffs" , but tried to slip in a few special cuffs for interest. The photo was cropped keeping many others out of the picture.

1.) The thump screws at the lower right are the ones that were owned by Houdini that I mention in the article.

2.) The Palmer leg irons just up from there are from James Randi and are in a photo of handcuffs in the book he co-wrote “Houdini: His Life and Art” . I don’t have the book in front me so I don’t know the page number, but it is near the back in the lower left page as I recall.

3.) The Hiatt’s just above them belonged to the great escape artist Murray from England.

4.) The Mirror cuff is one of 3 I have made by Ian McColl. This one has a real Brama lock used in it similar to the original Mirror cuff.

5. ) Resting on the antique slave collar ( I got from Steve Santini) you barely see a Hamburg 8. This is a flat key model but the only one I own that was never gimmicked by someone.

On the next page mixed in with all the shinny cuffs is a pair of plug 8 leg irons with both original plugs and chain.

If any body wants one of these magazines for there collection I have a few extras they gave me. The magazine is free but you could send $4.00 to cover postage and packing and I will send it to anywhere in North America. $8.00 to anywhere else in the world. I finally sat down and read How to Make Your Own Trick Handcuffs (And Use Them) The collection pictured in a 12 page spread was that of Dick Norman not Reno as I wrongly identfied before. There are about 15 cuffs that I did not recognize by name but I learned several were mis-spellings such as "Brockin" instead of "Bockin." There are MANY Darby variations as well that I had never known by name.
