These things are nifty. I love to see a better mousetrap come along. I rather think I may order a set to add to my little collection.
In viewing the video, in a practical sense, the one thing that struck me was the design of the pawl, which seems to accommodate a larger range of wrist sizes. Nothing new; Smith and Wesson did that years ago. But it is nice to see someone incorporating good ideas from the past into a collective package: universal key, slotted double lock feature, keyways on both sides.
Cool as it is, that hinge mechanism causes me to ask some practical questions:
1) Will it fit in a standard handcuff case/holster on a duty belt? Handcuff collectors, escape artists and the like won't care about this, but cops will.
2) However that one-way swivel mechanism is made (super cool), how resistant is it to grime and fouling? Or getting dropped in the dirt and just general banging around?
3) As Mr. Griffin pointed out, once you get a criminal suspect into handcuffs, the true key to preserving officer safety, prisoner safety and bystander safety is the vigilance of the cop. Handcuffs are not a substitute for a jail cell. Accordingly, while the video illustrated how nice these things are with quiet, cooperative handcuffees, what about the drugged up, spaced out, violent and combative "mice" you're trying to get into this improved "mousetrap" in the first place? Here, I see a real problem with that one-way swivel design. If the suspect is fighting you, after you get the first cuff on, the real fight is getting the second cuff on.
In the practical world, depending upon the circumstances, swivel cuffs and hinged cuffs each have their advantages and drawbacks when dealing with combative persons. But there is no rule anywhere that says a cop only has to carry only one style. More and more LEOs out on the streets carry one of each to use as the individual circumstances may dictate.
Hence, while it seems this item does incorporate the features of swivel cuffs and hinged cuffs into one, I can't help but wonder whether this will be more of a hindrance rather than a help.
