Hello Ian:

In the opening scene, the handcuff appears almost imperceptibly right after the Mata Hari places her protest sign on the bench. The square shaped lock case leads me to believe that the cuff is an American Munitions as the production pre dates the name change to the AHC, and I don't believe that Crocket & Kelly had commenced production of yet. This is likely the same restraint used in the opening scene by Agent 85 in the "Orient Express" episode that I referenced in Yossie's briefcase thread.

Good Job Jason,

Here is what I noticed in this episode.

The key ring thrown onto the table did not contain a Marlin key yet Kitty got those cuffs open lickity split.
When the waitress went to get the prisoners dishes, the cuff popped open and he quickly concealed the fact by putting his other hand on the cuffs to "relock" them.

I am not sure what year the show depicted, but Bicycle brand cards were first printed in 1881. I doubt, that these cards players would have had bicycle cards to play with.

I hadn't noticed the cuff opening on its own until you pointed that out. That got me to question whether they substituted the more recently made Caveney Invention Co. cuffs, but I double checked and sure enough -- they were indeed Marlin Daley Bottlenecks. Perhaps they were gaffed for theatrical use.

Handcuffs have figured prominently in several Gunsmoke episodes that I've seen over the years, though I no longer remember the titles.

Great detective work on the Bicycle brand playing cards!
Luckily for Jon Voight, Kitty keeps an ace in her sleeve.

Back in the '70s, you may recall that Emergency and Adam-12 aired on the same network. In one episode of Emergency, the paramedics of Squad 51 are discussing an episode of Adam-12 in which Officer Reed is taken hostage with his own handcuffs. After sifting through the episode description list this morning, I finally managed to locate this episode in the show's sixth season. This episode aired on Jan. 15, 1974.

For today's viewing entertainment, I present this most excellent episode of Wanted-Dead or Alive.
Originally aired as a Chritmas present on Dec. 26, 1959, this 1/2 hour show is called "The Vanishing Act" and features Steve McQueen as bounty hunter, Josh Randall.
He is on the trail of Bart (Bartola the Baffling Escape Artist) McCready (Lawrence Dobkin)who is in cahoots with 2 ornery types who rob the bank while he performs his handcuff escapes and underwater trunk escape while all the townsfolk including the sheriff are down at the rivers edge.

Even better than the handcuff escape is the help he gets from his daughter/magician assistant, Nicole (Dyan Cannon)

It is interesting that in the poster, the name of the escape artist is billed as "Bartolo" but the sign on his wagon, his name switches to "Bartol<font color="#FF0000">a<font color="#000000">".





This long chain Mattatuck is easy pickins for Bartola the Baffling


Special assistance from a very young and shapely Dyan Cannon

The show even comes complete with a nicely executed jail escape
