German WW ll Restraints

The Military channel (Direct TV) has a series called The Secret War telling the various untold stories about covert British operations during WW ll. The one on a few days ago was called The Triple Agent and the spy network in Northern Occupied France. With prior knowledge the Germans rounded up and executed most of them. At the end of the war, the British investigated and only then they discovered what had happened. At the very end of the program they showed one of the camps where their agents where taken.

On one wall there were two rows of restraints neatly hanging. The top row contained eight Berliner style solid bar irons (one of this type sold on eBay a few months ago and it is pictured on one of the earlier Forum posts). The bottom row contained eight hand cuffs of the fold-over (Lilly style) and looked like they would be locked with a padlock. Anyway it was quite a display.

Hi Ron, I am glad you saw this as well, I was only telling another collector, that I had seen a political prisoner in WWII (Germany) wearing a very similar solid bar cuff and chained to a bench. It was a different documentary though.

This program is going to be repeated the evening of 13 March on Direct TV. I used the pause on my DVR to view the cuffs. In real time they only show for a second or two.

Hi Ron,

It's a pity this program is not available for Sweden as I'm really keen on German restraints.

I have a photo in my archive that I don't know where it came from (maybe here). It's great number of German
restraints in the picture and there is a number of bar restraints but not of the fold-over type, more like
the Houston with a lock at the end.


The bar cuff you are referring to, was it the Schwertfeger? You can see them in a picture from Michael Busch's
collection (below) and on the top (right) on the picture above.

Following the liberation of a concentration camp, (uncertain if it was actually a camp for political dissidents). It was a news service photo.

I have another one in the collection here showing how prisoners there were shackled with Berliner type handcuffs.

It's interesting how these old restrainst were used as late as WWII.
The Berliner cuffs must have been manufactued in late 1800's, or am

Great pictures!!! I am going to take another look after I record the show next week. The bar cuffs were a solid bar without any swivels and I believe the bows were on the same side. I tried to find the one posted on the Forum but have not found it.

Hi,
I remember seeing some History Channel program about the war and they went into a prison.
Inside one of the rooms was a wooden rack filled from floor to ceiling and wall to wall Berliners.
The footage was wartime or shortly thereafter.
I think they are all now in Wupertal.

It seems as though the leg irons in the bottom of the pic are each connected with some sort of odd swivel joint connector. Much like the bar cuffs at top.

Steve, I have never seen cuffs like those displayed in the lower row. They do look like they have a swivel or hinge movement. Hopefully some of the European collectors may be able to provide some information on these. Too bad the shot was cut off at the top.
