Japanese Handcuffs?

Hello once again,

Ever since I first posted here about the ASP handcuffs, I started collecting them, sure nothing too interesting, but I was wondering, what kind of handcuffs do the Japanese use?
I know that back in the day of feudal Japan, Hojjutsu was the way to go, but what about in modern days, what kind of handcuffs do the Japanese use?

I was unable to find anything substantial on old or new Japanese handcuffs, any ideas?

I have some Japanese "Jay Pee" cuffs... they are inexpensive and work well, but there are definitely better cuffs out there for the same price.

I've kinda wondered that as well because I've never seen a really good Japanese cuff. I've got many examples of the Takeda or star wheel style, I've got a cheap Peerless copy and that's it.

I wonder if the Takeda style was ever officially used.

Based on completely circumstantial support, I'm betting the supplier is ANHUA. They have a whole line Peerless-style knockoffs, and even an H&R Super knockoff. They also claim to export about $40M anually, and specifically list Japan as a "customer".

Also, I thought I heard that the U.S. made available mass quantities of a knockoff of the H&R Super to Japan during the post-WWII occupation, due to a shortage. Without a compelling reason to change over to a different style, maybe they stuck with the same style.

I thought a quick web search would solve this, but with the non-Roman alphabet and the fact they blur out the cuffs in perp walk photos, it does not seem clear.

When I was in Japan 1967-1969 & R&R 1970, the JNP (Japan National Police) used swing through handcuffs with star wheels or gears, however they were much stronger than any toy cuffs.

Both sides were stamped with the name of the Prefecture (State) and a serial number on each side, which could be traced to the officer issued them.

The lock was pin tumbler, flat key, such as was used on gas station cash registers in the 50's, when the key was inserted then pushed further a rectangular section would go deedper into the case and release the lock.

They did not appear to have any type of double lock.

And The Key Was Kept At the Police Station, the officers did not have one.

I have seen people apprehended in Japan however I never saw anyone being handcuffed, prehaps simular to the methods used in GB.

No they were similar to the S&W model 90's, regular swing through handcuffs.

And even though they utilized the starwheel, or gear, appeared to be as strong as the S&W model 90's.

Wow, Thanks so much for the info!

Now, I wonder how I can get a pair for the collection.
From what I was able to dig up, and a Japanese friend of mine, he said that the various Prefectures order these from an authorized government source, that will only supply them to government authorities.

I understood the star wheel type, actually they reminded me of the cheap metal toy handcuffs I had once. They looked identical, apart from being poorly made, they were an exact replica.

I've got several Japanese older Takeda style cuffs but non like those new ones.

Okay Ian, if you haven't gotten a pair then that's not a good sign. Reminds me of an old far-side cartoon where two guys crawling acrossed the dessert meet a camel crawling from the other direction and one says to the other "well, THIS, isn't a good sign".

Surely there has to be a way for us to obtain some samples. Any ideas folks?

If this is what everyone means by "the new style", I definitely want the whole series. This is exactly what I would expect from Japan: clean look, improvements on existing, well established design, and most of all accomodation for the fact that most Japanese (how do I put this elegantly) men's wrist are the size of (western) women's, and women's the size of children's. Hence three sizes available of the same model.

Also, a few unique things, like the split pawl, in both ratchet and wheel type. No idea why you would bother splitting the pawl if you are using the star wheel, they seem redundant for anti-shim, and it looks it uses a single bit key, so its not an anti-pick feature. Still cool though.
