Does anyone know the difference between Yuil "standard" and "silicone lined" handcuff keys?

I didn't realize that there was any difference until you posted the question asking about it. I just looked through my yuils and now I can say that the silicone models that I have have a much thinner barrel design than the older style yuil cuffs. The new keys seem to me to be much easier to accidentally break. The newer keys will operate the older yuil cuffs, but the older keys will not even fit down into the silicone models.

Seems like it would make them harder to pick because less ease of access for sure. I just can't help but wonder how much more of a key breakage issue did they create when they came out with the new models.

I was acutally going to pick up a Yuil hinged silicon lined pair for my collection - I read somewhere before that they [keys] are prone to breaking, but never thought that it was the case?

How so, are they just poorly made, chromed keys?

Also, what makes the Yuil cuffs so special (that they won't unlock standard keyed cuffs, and standard cuffs won't unlock them?

I went to paint and made a sketch for you. A yuil key is split down the middle much like the ASP restricted keyway is.

The yuil keys i have will unlock most of my standard cuffs, and they are for the silicone lined yuils. The reason standard keys won't unlock the yuil is due to the teeth being split down the middle and a anti shim plate for the slot to ride through making it almost impossible to shim, hence the double bit key.

That's what I thought they were (split).
When they break, does one of the split flags break?

Also, I have thought about it for quite a while;
Could you take a hacksaw and make your own slot in the flag of the key?

For ASP restricted, I have saw standard keys and it works perfectly. For Yuil, not tested.

I made an asp restricted extended key by taking a standard key and a dremel with a cutting wheel to make the notch. This may work with the older yuils, but I do not think it work with the silicone models. The keyway on those are made very tight. That's why the barrels on the silicone models are thinner. The tolerances on the keyway are extremely tight. If your key is not 90 degrees to the cuff, it won't go in. It has to be lined up almost perfectly on the silicone models. I'll try and snap some pictures after while and upload them here.

Thanks a lot! That really helped me understand. I never knew that the keyway way that tight. Shows how concerned they are about the shimming and picking.
Am I right in thinking, that since the keyhole is so tight (and small), that the key flag is thin, ergo making it brittle, also doesnt help that the allready small and thin flag is split.

I should have taken a picture of the side of the key where you could see the split. But generally I would say the split contributes to key breakage. The thinner barrel design of their silicone models also means less metal to stabilize the flag part of the key. The thinner it is the less support the flag can take. Also a standard key i.e. peerless or asp will not even physically fit into the keyway of the silicone model. It will fit into the older yuil, so I assume you could dremel a notch in a standard key to work with the shim guard but I have not done it.

On a side note,
On the yuil website they say (NIJ Pass) beside their silicone models but their old models do not say this. I haven't seen them show up on the NIJ approved handcuff list but their website seems to state they passed NIJ certification. Can anyone think of a reason why the older Yuils would not have passed NIJ certification? They seem like they are built pretty decent to me. Their chains seem kinda thin, but the new silicone models that say NIJ Pass appear to have small links for chain as well.

On the topic of the handcuffs.
This is a complete guess, but I have not seen any police department in Canada/US or Europe that use YUIL handcuffs.
In that case, Perhapps YUIL did not think that it was important to test their old handcuffs for NIJ approval?
As for the "silicon lined" YUIL cuffs, well perhapps they would like to expand their marketshare outward and have
self-tested these handcuffs - ergo staping these as NIJ approved.

It's completely plausable. Perhapps I should contact them - on second thought, I will contact them.
I will post an answer as soon as I get one from YUIL.

Nij approval must be done at certain accredited and recognized facilities. A manufacturer could perform the test themselves I guess, but that would not earn them NIJ approval as they are not recognized as QUALIFIED to perform the official test. Perhaps that is why they don't show up on the approved NIJ handcuff list. But honestly would you want to take a manufacturers word that it passed or would you want a third party to test them. They all claim to have the best available right?

So with all the talk about how it seems, what are the actual facts surrounding breakage? Do they in fact break easily now that they have opted for the smaller thinner daintier key? I am certain I want a pair of yuil handcuffs and leg cuffs and given that old vs new all use the same key in that same category, what is said here will influence my decision if I will go for newer silicone model handcuffs and leg cuffs or if I will buy a pair each of the old ones. I want more than 2 keys you see, so while handcuffs are my priority I don't want 2 pairs of the same cuffs just to get more keys and nobody in England sells keys separately. So, I need to buy 2 products. I just do not know which way I should go, old or new. New "should" be better right? I mean, new technology, protection, comfort etc I cannot believe that the keys for the silicone models would be that easy to break surely to god?

Because this is all I have. I would like to know from people what the actual facts are. So given that people mention their opinion, as have I, I am asking for actual facts on the keys.

I got a pair, the same as shown on the pictures from the other person. Mine do not show that they are made in Korea though. The key is indeed thin and breakable but they altered the strength of spring accordingly and it only takes a gentle turn in order to unlock the handcuffs.

On a side note, I love these handcuffs. Very comfortable and just feel great. I tried my Ultimate Handcuff Key I made after seeing it mentioned on this forum somewhere and it also fits these Yuil handcuffs. I will be buying another pair in due course.

So I would recommend to the OP not to worry about the keys. If you want you can file down a Smith & Wesson key, use a hacksaw to add a little gap in the bit and you can then use your new key based on S&W quality keys.
