How old were you when you started collecting?

I've posted a couple topics that I've wondered about for a while.

Were any of you kids when you started collecting? I was probably 10 or so. At that age it was just the toy ones to start but I rolled on from there. Sometimes I can't figure out where I got the collector bug. My parents were always super-straight arrows, pretty much no hobbys and they didn't have a lot of money so collecting took effort. But from a kid I've always loved collecting things and my small but growing handcuff collection was always my most enjoyable.

I remember the plastic ones were first - you know that ones that had the little hole for a paper clip if you lost the keys - then I got a pair of metal toy ones that didn't use keys and were kinda small. Then, and I'll never forget it, at Kay-bee toys while on vacation I saw a pair of takeda style cuffs in a gray box in the display case. My parents bought them for me and when we got back to the hotel I compared them with the other 2 sets that I brought along. Those were my first ones that were strong enough to not be able to break them even though they had the safety latch.

I showed them off to my little cousin (the kind who always gets everything he wants) and as usual he outdid me. His dad bought him some S&W handcuffs from a retired cop. First time I did get to see some real ones though. Later on at a gun shop, I saw the S&W model 90 handcuffs with that neat old box and put that one my Christmas wish list. I got them when I was 11 or 12 for Christmas and the bliss went to a new level.

Kinda leveled off from there until I got a job as an adult and she's slowly took off from there.

Why did I ramble on about this? Maybe just to help myself recollect, don't know. I've never understood where I picked this interest up at. Before the internet, I would have thought I was the only one in the world who collected stuff like this. I guess I'm curious to if anyone else got the bug as early as I did.


Oh yeah, anybody got any pics of the boxes of the old Takeda style cuffs? I don't have that gray box from a kid and would like to see what it looked like or the original takedas for that matter.

Hi,

As the old Takeda sytle cuffs were one of the first restraints I owned, I sort of have a soft spot for them.

I do not have any original boxes for them, but I have managed to collect 5 pairs of the earliest models, all slightly different.

These are all back from the "good ol' days" when the Takeda style cuffs were solidly made and had all metal parts.

Once they switched to nylon and/or plastic spacer washers on either side of the locking wheel, the design started to go down hill fast.

Some of the other cuffs I have a fondness for are the old Spanish designs made by Alcyon.

There were various sporting goods stores I hung out at as a kid because they carried these models.

From single lock to flat key high security cuffs, the Alcyon restraints were very well made and fun to play with.

Glad I kept mine!

I aquired a pretty old set up the takeda cuffs that appear to be made of some sort of metal like brass. A magnet definately doesn't stick to them but they are alot heavier made then the taiwan and later models.

Do you have any pics of your 5 styles? I too have a soft spot for them and have tried to aquire the various ones encountered but there sure is alot, even now. One pair of the super cheap zinc alloy ones, my 5 year old son just snapped!

hi tim, i too started collecting as a kid, and guess what, my first pair of cuffs were takeda's too, they really do turn up everywhere. mine at least had "made in japan" stamped on them, came in a red box, long since gone!, pity as i like to keep the boxes too. my first interest was for rope tying etc, then the handcuff collecting thing took over, as a mechanic i really do like to examine every cuff i find, the quality of the older ones i have is far superior to the modern stuff, i mean from the construction point of veiw, not the security!. i would really like to get a look at those new gotcha cuffs, i just wish i still had that first pair of takedas.... your post took me back a few years too!...ttfn.c.

Definately same here. I also was very good at rope escapes as a kid. Later on when I got the cuffs I learned to open them with bobby pins and bent "T" pins in all various positions. I've never been a paid escape artist but I've definately tried some harder stuff then what I've seen SOME magicians do with their huge baggy strait jackets on TV. Along the way I did also aquire a humane restraints jacket - which I've always thought was so easy to escape, why would anyone need a gaffed one. I did finally get to try a posey jacket with the loops when I was an adult and that did prove more challenging. As sort of a bet, my wife, who's a nurse put me in it and left me home when she went grocery shopping and I finally made it out. She was convinced that one of my friends came over and let me out which wasn't the case.

That was sort of the last escape challenge I ever did and that was 6 or 7 years ago. Sort of fulfilling something I wanted to try as a kid. Don't do much of that anymore though as I've learned the limberness is much easier as a teen.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming to be anything near the pros on this board. Just relating that because your post makes me think that maybe most collectors also had a nack for escaping and trying to defeat the locks that they collect.

hi again tim, after your last post, i got to thinking just how long ago i bought my takeda's, i guess i was about 13 or 14, i soon figured out the workings of them, then moved on to hiatts 1960 cuffs, (im from england, now in canada), again these were easy to manipulate, things kinda took off from there, i now collect modern stuff, with the odd exception of an old cuff at the right price!, i too thought i was the only strange kid collecting!. thanks joe for starting this site, its great to read and learn from other enthusiasts. i too went down the straightjacket route, but never quite got out, the person applying the jacket knew their stuff!...but i'll give it another go one day im sure. instead of "tying up" message space why not drop me an e at, bobfoxy@hotmail.com..ttfn.c

The one pair of cuffs that I really wanted as a kid I've still not got and that's the S&W model 94 cuffs. As far as older cuffs those, the spanish star cuffs and original takeda cuffs are what I'm constantly looking for.

How do you know if takeda cuffs are original? Do they have that written anywhere? Mine look like the originals in this gallery but have no writing and are not steel but possibly plated brass? Also, the chain is welded.

To be honest I don't run into as many good deals now as I used to. Even ebay hasn't been coming through for me.

Hello again! I love finding people to talk about this hobby with. I will start by going back to 4th grade. I grew up in a sub-division in Oak Creek, WI., and there were not many boys so I mainly had all girls for friends. In the summer before 4th grade I was in some wooded fields and met this kid. Well anyway his dad was a Military Police man in V-NAM. and he had a pair of handcuffs from the American Handcuff Co. All I know is I liked those cuffs. First they were real, and second I think it was just because I new they were made in WI were I lived. (see my other posting!) Anyway I always liked playing with them, locking kids up and of course getting into some kind of minor trouble from parents or teachers at school! (Well moving on, and I do not want to bore you but please respond back when you do get time, because I really enjoy talking about these things with people). I was adopted and my parents got me when I was 2. But they had me in swimming lessons right away, and I joined swim teams and took all kinds of classes, and was a certified Life Gaurd by the time I was 13. In the state of WI you cant life gaurd until your 16. But doing the CPR and Rescue, First Aid and stuff, I wanted to be a Paramedic or EMT. Well when I turned 14 I was volunteering with a fireman at a 4th of july event in a ambulance first aid station and they said that the city of Cudahy was trying to organize a fire explorers post. So I signed up and of course there was not enough people interested. So I ended up joining Oak Creeks Police Exploreres Post. Well after my first ride along, THAT WAS IT!!! I wanted to become a police officer. I bought those cuffs from my friends dad. Only problem was I also joined The Civil Air Patrol and traded some other kid them for a whole bunch of gear and uniforms and stuff. Well sometime during High School I was at a store and saw the 1/43rd scale police cars by Road Champs, and then It was on from there! I had to buy everything I could police car wise! I Had shelves full of tractors and even traded them to colletors to buy more police vehicles. Now to tell you the honest truth I never seen or have ever seen someone else collect police stuff! Tractors, Coke, Pepsi stuff like that yes, but never police stuff. Well when I turned 18 I went to work for American K-9 Service as a security officer. After my first handcuff training class I wanted those cuffs back and I kicked my self you know where! So I reasearched and ended up calling the factory in FonduLac WI to see where they waould sell the cuffs made by the American Handcuff Co. They gave me one place at that time, and I went right there to by some! Well Was I disapointed. They no longer made the style I was looking for or hoping for! Those cuffs were mainly made for the military and they changed the design due to many prisoner injuries and death. So the new design caused less trauma and were then used by police depts. I can give you the entire history of this company if you want more info. But I bought a chained and a hinged pair any way. But if you seen alot of the cuffs you know I am talking about I think you will understand my views. But the last types of cuffs look like toys to me. But any way to wrap this up, I have worked with many security and public safety agencies. I have worked as a police officer for the WI State Fair Park until I substained a shoulder injury that is preventing me from returning. I still do security and am in the process of starting my own security company. But I only carry the older style American Handcuff Company cuffs on me! I also do photography for several Milwaukee Co. Depts. of K-9 unit training, special events and of squads an officers. But my collection is growing and growing. I have everything from Business cards to 2 actual old style squads I enter in parades. I have over 5,000 police patches on display in my house, 400 various police cars on display etc. Handcuffs??? I think right now I only have 47 pairs on display, the rest are in boxes. Now I will have to admit I am 29 years of age and just this last year started to try and collect handcuffs, so most of mine are all Smiths-Peerless-Hiatts-Jaypee and American Handcuff Co. So I need and am searching for older models. I have some colts and vintage models but not many!!! But some day I would like to take everything and open like a weekend type shop or museum. Cause I am like a police historian of WI. I have binders and binders of pics and articles. Well thanks for taking the time to read this. Daniel

I have a pair of the older American military cuffs you are refering to. They were quite sharp and unusually quiet when you closed them. At least my pair is.

hi everyone

I was about 8 years old when I started my collection
the first cuff was the tekada
the second a pair of bianchi copy's
then I was stopped a little time
and now I have over the 100 cuffs
but I still love them all
and I dicided to collect more and more
I want to collect till I die
