#2Is a lead chain of sorts but not for humans. It is an animal lead chain of the kind commonly found and used in barns and on farms. All someone has done is loop a plug leg cuff through one end.

#3A few questions come to mind...why would someone handcraft the T-handle if used for animals why not just use a basic piece of iron. Furthermore, the man I got it from paid nothing for it and had no idea or dreams of value let alone take the time to fab something up. I'm not saying your wrong...I just doubt it due to the lack of logic involved. However mine is just an opinion, you made your statement as fact (or matter of fact) which I assume you wouldn't do unless it was just that.

#4The shackle is really bent out of round. The lead chain could have been used with the shackle or could have been added to make it more interesting. The handle does have some nice workmanship.

#6The shackle is indeed bent out of round. The old man said that he was told that it was bent to fit around a boot...not sure how practical that is either but makes a for a better story. At least the links you posted pointed out my views on just using a very basic handle albeit quite close.
Here is my thoughts mixed with the obvious. The plug cuff has a key so it wouldn't make sense for the need to pry it open. At best the mans statement of bending it to use for a leg shackle is true but not the brightest idea. I believe the T-handle was handcrafted to be used for this as its alot more detailed than the above links. Obviously the chain(s) have been scabbed together. The most practical is its like the prison ball and chains...ugly as hell and put together with whatever they could find laying around....but it did its job. Personally I like the the piece quite a bit for its oddity....however it was aquired as auction items (the wife and I buy and sell antiques). I often keep items I swear to the wife I'm buying for resale. In the last six months I've agreed to keep closer to my word. However I'd like to keep the piece which is why there is a reserve but at least I can tell her I tried.

#7HI Joshua,what it was org. use for is a mystery for sure and i doubt that someone would go to a lot of trouble making the nice T handle for the purpose of what my thoughts of how it got bent,i am a hunter,even if you were to hang a deer to gut/skin it the weight of the animal would not be enough to bend the shackle,however a cow/bull /steer prob. would!

try applying it around both your wrist palms together, maybe it was used like a cuff around both hands,like a lead chain!

#8THOUGHT #1 it was what was around they through it over a beam and hosted the animal up and it got bent!

#9Hi, I believe the chain is as per Santini's thoughts and could also be just a pull handle for a feed chute, type of furnace door or even a tower bolt on a tall church door. Anything requiring a pull handle and long chain.
The shackle is what the shackle is.
If the two pieces have been together for a while, someone had a different purpose for them. Years ago I used a neck collar I had made to wrap around a large tree branch, from which I hoisted by chain block a heavy load. It bent the collar more than any human could, didn't mean it was supposed to be that way nor been used in a prison etc.
Who knows what it was used for, easier to say what it's not been used for.

As for the auction item; who knows? Besides, why let obvious facts stand in the way of a good story? If the buyer is happy, then I rather think we should all be happy for him.

Congratulations.
You have discovered what anybody who ever grew up on a farm just picked up by growing up on a farm.
That damned cow never could figure out how to flip a T-handle sling off.
That's why we used them.
What disgusts me is that when somebody finds one of them these days, or an old set of cow-kickers, they want to label them as slave artifacts.
Kindly forgive me. But attempting to turn this old barnyard trash into hideous objects of .... whatever, just makes me sick.
Next thing you know, they'll probably be advertising an old three-legged milking stool, turned wrong side up, into some sort of perverted 19th century sexual device.

I never milked a Yugoslavian cow. That's an awful fancy milking stool.
Guess them European bovines had higher standards than the ones I knew in Texas as a kid.
Does it come with a corresponding sterling silver milk bucket?
