Hi everyone, I have a very rare cuff for sale: The German Dollar Sign Handcuff with accessories! I am selling the cuff with key, the chain, and the 80 plus year old German double throw padlock as seen in my Handcuff Talk video:

I have seen these go for as much as $750.00-$900.00 (USD) within the last two years. Asking $550.00 (USD) plus actual shipping for mine with accessories.

There are many previous discussions about the origin of the $ cuff. German, Austrian, Italian and Russian. So far I don't think anyone has the information to prove the origin.

I do know there are three models, the flat key, the round key, and no key which has a padlock locking device. This model came out of Ethiopia in the 1950's. This led me to believe maybe they were Russian since they were in Ethiopia during that time and made a cheaper version.

Don't forget that the Italians and Germans were colonial powers in Africa and fought there in WW2 which might also explain $ cuffs being found there.

This style of padlock is typical German security padlock from the early 1960ths. I have a simular German padlock with same style of key. However this have a Brittish marking.

The reason why I think that the Dollar-Cuff is Italian is quite simple. Most of them come up for sale in Italia I would say at least 90%. I bought some of them from an Italian seller and he told me that they were used by the Italian military.

Dear Günter,

the simpliest answer is usually not the best. Between neither nor or either or is as well as.

We are talking about antiques, so we should know a bit about history.

The question is Italian or Austrian - and the answer ist - these cuffs are both (not the rarer "modified" version, this is Italian). Why that? There was the Italian Campaign durin WW I, the so called "Mountain war" which refers to a series of battles fought between the armies of Austria-Hungary and Italy in northern Italy between 1915 and 1918. Although member of the alliance with Germany and Austria, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary with the intention to annex Cisalpine Tyrol. As we all know, not only Germany, but also Austria-Hungary lost WW I. The case of the Austrian/Italian handcuff is very similar to the Schwertfeger/Kakaola handcuff. Austria lost war and had to pay reparations (money, material, patents etc.). This was the point when the Austrian Cuff became Italian.

Hello Hans,

thank you for the explanation. I remembered an old e-mail from Italy, that I got 7 years ago. The Italian wrote:
"The officer of Italian police that has given them to me, has told that these handcuffs are austrian-hungarian, but I don't have certain information.
He found them in a old house on the shore of the river Ticino, in the region of the Piemonte, in north Italy, where the Piedmontese troops defended him from the invasion of austrian-hungarian army. I don't know the true history, I take an interest me of fire weapons ex military ordinances. I am sorry... "

So that's matching to your message, I would say.
