This became something of an international requirement for any good that would be exported. Often all goods were marked, whether they were intended for export or not. It was easier to mark them and not export them than it was to omit the mark and later want to export them.

The marking of the country of origin began a few years after the Great War, about 1920. There is no exact year, as there were so many companies making so many products, and governments were not quick to formulate or to enforce regulations. (Many persons would call those the good old days.) By around 1923 and certainly by 1925, exported goods bore the names of the countries where they were made. There was no formal requirement for "Made in"; e.g., "Made in Germany" and "Germany" satisfied the requirement equally. By extension, if wording beyond the country name itself was used, the exact wording was not specified by law; e.g., "British Made" and "Made in Britain" or "Made in England" (if that was the case) were equivalent in effect.

The beginnings predate even 1918. This is an interesting history:

However, all this was more or less haphazard until the Great War ended, and then it took time for "all parties concerned" to be in compliance. I have not seen exceptions after the very early 1920s, whereas exceptions abound prior to that and very little was what one would call uniform or applied uniformly.

In other words, I was suggesting, or trying to suggest, from experience, a reliable rule of thumb.

Thanks. Your guesstimate on time is about what I had concluded. The break point seems to be about 1918 (Great War). Nothing before that.

Just my opinion, and I recognize there is a growing body of opinion that holds that my opinion ain't worth a damn.

Best I have been able to figure out, the country stampings on articles had no origin from any sort of big, international treaty of the sorts we have today. Rather, it had to do with tariffs; that is, the taxes levied upon imports. Your buddies get a low tax; the rest have to pay more.

What I find curious is that while you see the stamp ENGLAND rather often on items, you don't see a stamp of GREAT BRITAIN, UNITED KINGDOM, or WHALES or SCOTLAND. Or MERCIA, ANGLIA, NORTHUMRIA or any of those others in the Heptarchy.

But, Lord love 'em, the English are a bit different.

Nonetheless, and to try to keep this on a handcuff topic, as best I know, the first handcuff to bear the stamping MADE IN U.S.A was a Peerless. Along about 1925.
