Abloy handcuffs

I guess we all have a wish list of cuffs we really want to our collections. Our desires differ a lot but our lists hopefully
get a little shorter every year.

As I've specialized in European, and especially German and Finnish restraints, the Abloy handcuffs from 1920's are still
on the top of my list. Not a single set is known in a private collection and those of us who badly wants a set will probably
be disappointed.

However, I found some interesting information out of my topic that might be interesting for others.
The information itself is not new, it's dated 2009, but it was at least new to me.

Lars for those (me) of us not aware of the history of this cuff could you please elaborate. How many are estimated to be made? We're they actually manufactured by Abloy? How many are known and where do they reside so on and so forth.

Hi Joshua,

I'm afraid I have no information on the Abloy from 1920's. I've been looking for them
for many years and the set on the photo I have is said to come from the Abloy museum.
I have made a reserach and I don't know what Abloy museum it's referred to.

They are said not to have been brought to the market as the construction was too old. Peerless
released their new design and made many cuffs old over a night. That's why the Carberry from 1912
are so rare.

So now it will probably be ok and exceptable to re-fit our Chubb escorts with Abloy cylinders?

Probably this will be as close as most of us collectors will ever get to owning Abloy handcuffs.

Hello,
there are some more Abloy handcuffs in the world, but not from Abloy You can see some of them here:

On the next handcuff convention i will show them again. Cylinders are Abloy Protec, each pair keyed differently but also keyed alike is possible (if someone want, they can be also keyed alike to the doorlock cylinder).

On the picture the handcuffs looks like Chubb clones, perhaps they are made from Chubb?

Modern handcuffs in all respect but the original Abloy handcuffs are at least my "holy grale" as a collector.

There is not much known about them. The set on the picture below is said to belong to the Abloy museum in Finland.
My research says there is no such museum. How many were manufactured? Were they keyed alike? We will probably
never get the answers to these questions.

They have the classical Abloy combination of steel and brass, just like the old Abloy padlocks. Steel and brass in combination
seem to be a Finnish speciality.

Here is another Finnish cuff made of steel/brass, a Finnish Tower Bottom Key imitation.



I have tried to locate a set of the Abloy handcuffs for decades, offered crazy "finder's fees" and asked friends in Finland for their help. -Still no result!



According to my opinion, Finnish restraints are superior, probably even better than the German. Those of you
who are fortune to own a pair of Kakola cuffs probably agree.

They have not one swivel - they have two! Swivels are at the cuffs, the pieces holding the ring are rotating in the blocks welded to the bows. On my webside there is also a "making of" of the first samples:

There you can see all parts and how the cuffs are assembled. Of cause they are modern cuffs, made of stainless steel. And they are not copies of the original Abloy handcuffs.

they look great and work fine
better than the chubb handcuffs
I have the question asked if they have a second pair
i will get it

I have a pair of Andy-58's Abloy Darby Handcuffs. They are among the finest handcuffs ever made. One of my real favorites.
