Bean Prison / Patrolman question

How much should a person expect to pay for a Bean Prison or Patrolman in good condition with key? I collect mostly modern cuffs but would really like to add one of these to my collection.

It's difficult to articulate the joy I experienced when I obtained my first set of Bean Prison cuffs. Somewhere between getting behind the seat of an automobile and flying for the first time would closely equate to my exuberance.

In addition to the "Prison" and "Patrolman" models, you might also want to keep an eye out for the lighter and harder to come by "Detective" model. Lars (of the world renowned Holst Collection) posted an excellent article on differentiating between the similar looking Detective and Patrolman models. Also, it's worth noting that some of these come with warded locks, some do not. The double-bitted keys for the warded locks are a bit fragile on these, so extra caution should be exercised to ensure that the key is properly situated and not over torqued.

For current approximate values, you may wish to perform a search on several of Joe's Recent Auctions postings.

HI TIM,there is a big difference in the quality of the flat key model, which I believe was made by Lovell, I have all 3 versions flat,round & round barrel key
however the flat key model looks like it was made yesterday and the quality compared to the Iver Johnson's models which were made later on is superior

Ah yes, the J.P. Lovell Arms Co. flat keyed dust cover model. I suspect that these were designed to overcome the shortcomings of the aforementioned models. Here you get 2 bits with a key that won't fall apart and jam up the lock works. They only produced so many of these before switching over to the "improved" Bean Cobb design.

In this day of titanium alloys and carbon fiber, I always thought it would be fun to show up at my local cycling paths riding an antique, clunky Lovell Arms Co. Diamond bicycle.

The keyway doesn't actually rotate; it's stationary.

"solid" key (round shaft, no hole [US] or bore [UK]
"Flat" key (normally, 'flat steel' [US & UK] key stamped from flat sheet,
may or not have corrugations, milling
and fit a lock with or without keyhole guide (rotating slotted device to align
key to axis)
