Lucas's Safety lock Regd 1871

On behalf of Frank I post these photos of an End Lock marked - Lucas's Safety lock Regd 1871.
It looks like the one sold recently on eBay along with a Hiatt handcuff of similar age.

I think what may have been Registered is the addition of the thumb grip to help push shut this very small lock. I assume it is the "Snap Lock" type with a screw key rather than the "Home Office" style with the slotted bolt which screws down to lock it.

I cannot add any more comment as I've never seen this one before, but maybe someone else here has one or could explain why it might be called a "Safety" lock.

Hello again. Yes it was the one sold on ebay (I paid far too much but it seems rare) and yes, it is a snap lock with a screw pillar. I thought I had a key which would fit but I haven't which is a bit of a bind but it is VERY small and no handcuff key will fit. Cheers, Frank

yes a very nice find indeed, if you want to open it try a small piece of copper tubing, thread it on and pull back!

Piano wire wound like a corkscrew will do the trick too...

Thanks for the advice on how to open it but it doesn't appear to have an internal spring like cuffs do do wont pull open. I think I will have to wait until I find another small barrel lock key.

OK THEN TRY THREADING IT ON THE SHAFT, THEN MARK THE TUBING, TURN IT OUT A LITTLE AND CRIMP THE TUBING'S FORMING A SHOULDER THEN TRY IT !

IT COULD ALSO USE A EXTERNAL THREADED KEY,I HAVE SOME THAT WERE MADE THAT WAY, CAN YOU SEE DOWN IN THE BARREL, I'VE NEVER TRIED TO MAKE A KEY FOR AN EXTERNAL THREAD USING COPPER TUBING BUT I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU COULDN'T!
DO OF COURSE OIL IT PRIOR TO TIRING!

I have checked and the key has an internal thread as per most handcuffs.

After a VERY long soaking in easing oil my spare key has opened the Lucas. I now feel slightly better about spending so much money on it. Thanks for all the suggestions on how to open it and now all I need is for someone to come up with an ID for it.

This nice bicycle lock made by Jos Lucas Ld Birmingham seems to be the best bet for the maker or retailer of your end lock.
A google search of this maker shows that he made bicycle lamps and went on to found the Lucas Automotive Industries.
