Hello Lars,

this was heavy weight version, the cheek plates are doubled in their thickness and they have very thick and heavy chain. I was overbid unfortunatelly.

This might be rare but its really not an impressive design Lars I have seen many cuffs in u and joes collection that are much more extraordinary.

I confess, I now have two. The one I have had for many year is different than the one in your picture and the one on ebay. It has the symmetrical swivel with the two sides the same size.

It has the honor of having the worst mechanism of most any cuff ever made by Hiatt. For this reason it is rare.

Congratulations! I had no idea about this heavy version of the Reliant. I've only seen a heavy version of
the Hiatt 1960 in Alex Nichols book.

I was the second highest bidder but I'm happy they went to a good home.

Here are a couple photos of the Hiatt Reliant from the 1950s. The one on top is the one that just sold on eBay. It is made up of two sets of normal plates and has a larger than normal swivel. Both models use the unusual star wheel method of locking. Strange cuffs.

So Joe, to be clear - then some Reliant models have standard "teeth" on their bows (like the photo at the very top)...and some Reliant models have HOLES in their bows (like the a Japanese Takeda)??

I need to post another picture. The bows do not have holes, they have triangular teeth that engage a wheel with complementary triangular teeth.

It's more like a crude 'cog and rack'. Forerunner to the Gotcha method which was better executed.

I agree with Ian's description. It has a wheel, but I should not have called it a "star" wheel.
In any case it is pretty wild.

Thanks Joe for the photos, they are good to see and I am surprised to see a variation. The one I know of in Melbourne is the single strand type.

Thanks for posting the photos Joe!

It's a very interesting cuff indeed. On the photo there is an ordinary Peerless key that I guess came with the
heavy set.
My set, which is the ordinary Reliant, takes a somewhat bigger barrel key (see photo on top of the thread). It also
don't have the top on the handle as they don't double lock.

Are your Reliant cuffs keyed different?

I do not have an original key for either set. Not all standard keys work you need on with a somewhat larger than normal bit. The key in the picture will work in both cuffs.

i want to bring my reliant to this
and some 2 other hiatts
the key what i get with the reliant
and the 2 other cuffs looks real to me

but i do not know for sure
left the reliant
on the middle a hiatts i guess first model after the reliant
on the right the second model after the reliant

It's hard to tell what you have from the photos as the bows are most interesting. The Reliant is stamped "Reliant".
Which ones of them have that stamping?

If they don't have the "Reliant" stamping the are likely "Hiatt Peerless". What kind of ratchet pattern do they
have? -Ordinary ratchets (Peerless style) or triangular teeth??

Lars what i allready said the one on the left is marked britissh made on the left
and HIATT RELIANT on the right cuff
it is in mirror than the first reliant here in this post
the other 2 i said they are not reliant but are the ones who came out after the reliant
the key i'm pretty shure it is an original

hope this info helps

and yes i know my cuffs are really worn but i like them a lot
