the history of the company.

Most of the cuffs are unmarked but a few of them are marked "A Stotz"



So, I simply got curios to know more about the maker of these restraints. This is the information I found of
Albert Stotz (1815 - 1893):


Albert Stotz completed apprenticeship as a mechanic in the Württemberg smelter Wasseralfingen, where he was champion and 1850 foundry inspector In 1855. He was a founding director at Klett & Co. In Nuremberg he was the director at CA Riedinger (founded by Ludwig August Riedinger, later merged with MAN).
In 1860 he established a foundry in Stuttgart, which flourished after initial difficulties in 1868 with the patented Stotz's skate as the main product. Since 1870, chains, conveyors, bucket elevators and circulation devices were manufactured.
In 1899 the company moved over to Kornwestheim. In 1913 the A. Stotz AG is established, the company stayed in business until 1981.

Sorry Ian, you'll have to ask one of your friends at the Magic Cafe. But I enjoy reading the others research - great.

My Stotz is one of the unmarked ones, except for a K and a 1.
I also notice on mine that the machine-turned end cap is held in place with a pin, similar to how the endcap on some English cuffs is reinforced.

Now I'm wondering - who made the first adjustable cuff that was not a swing-thru?

Mercedes Benz in Stuttgart Ger.

Hi Ian,

I think your father was right about learning languages. Not that I was very bright at school but I loved learning languages even though I didn't realize the future benefits.
Some skills in German has been extremely useful as a collector when buying, dealing and trading cuffs with Germans. A number of my significant German cuffs would never have been acquired without speaking German as many Germans only speak their native language. Sweden is such a small and remote country and we need some language skills to be able to communicate with people outside the boarders.

I tried to find out a little more, and as it seems there exists a "Wirtschaftarchiv Baden-Württemberg" (Economical Archive of Baden-Württemberg (the German country the Stotz company was located in)), and this link leads to the Internet-entry of this archive for the Stotz company:

When I understand and translate the provided information correctly this means that the material of the Stotz company was taken into the archive (which is placed in Stuttgart) in 1982 when the company was relocated to Kornwestheim, and that they have 9 metres of shelf-space filled with material about the Stotz company from 1800 until 1978, in useable condition.
