Old Truncheon/Billy Club OR Sock Darner??

Hi all, I was at an old Maine estate sale today and found this old black "club". The gentleman had lots of stuff from his relatives in England. I spotted this little wooden club. He laughed and said he though it was a "truncheon". His wife said she thought it was a "sock darner"! It is quite small, only measures about 7 1/2" long... what is your opinion? I looked up sock darners and this doesn't look like one, so I'm thinking a little billy club/sap?? Any interest in this, let me know!

Not a sock darning ball; they are egg shaped with a handle.

Probably not a truncheon for people (although it could be), but for fish. When you haul in a big one, you whack it on the head to stun it so it won't flop around in the bottom of your boat.

PS: Sorry I CAN'T advise on your club above,however 7.5 inches sounds small for a club that would be used on fish, do to the fact that it would be used a lot,though small enough for a roving patrolman to carry if needed !
