Handcuff collection

Hello,

I found this forum as I was doing some research on handcuff collections. My father was a locksmith in Canada, and had collected handcuffs, old locks, ball and chains, etc for years. He recently passed away and we do not know what to do with the collection. Can anyone provide any resources I can use to assess the quality of the collection - I'm led to believe it's good - and give any ideas as to what could be done with it? Sell it, donate it somewhere, etc?

Its probably best to contact a collector to help appraise the quality and price of your fathers collection to better help you find the best avenue to take. A handfull of collectors have websites established that could be beneficial to you. Below are two collectors web sites that have recently helped out in instances just like this and are honest, kind, and knoweldegable guys.

ROBIN :: before you sell a single item, make sure that you get values for each item from at least THREE different collectors otherwise you may get LOW BALL values as there are those who may try to STEAL items from you - so to speak... joe

Would not suggest contacting GB68 he does not have the best track record. Listen to Josh and use a reputable source to best help you. Steve is certainly very experienced and knows his stuff as well. Posting photos on here can be a little tricky but I am sure any of the above mentioned experts can help you post them on here if you would like multiple opinions.

First of all, sorry for the loss of your father.

This is probably the best resource available not only to figure a value, but there's also a lot of prospective buyers on here as well.

I know I'm always looking for new items to add to the collection.

The best way to protect yourelf would be to get at least 3 appraisals on each of the items.
If the collection is small enough, you can post pictures here and many of us here will give you the most accurate pricing, as an average.
DO NOT take 1 person's advice as they could be self serving and may be looking out for THEIR best interest, not yours.

This forum is an excellent place to sell any items as people will send their offers to you and it's free of any fees.

I would not suggest contacting GB68 as he has a track record of really bad business dealings even though he will try and sell you on him being conveniently located in Canada. If you decide to part with the collection never ship anything until money is hand this is a great site where most people will treat right but there is always a few that can make a great deal not so so great

I'd be more than happy to let you know what you have. I also would request and agree with Joe Tanner that you get a few opinions.
Damon Shields is another great one to ask, as Joshua stated. Best would be to supply photographs in small groups of the
cuffs. If I need any other I can ask. Or, you can post photos here and get opinions from all willing to supply them.

Robin--The advice given here is good. Posting pictures here will give you good information on their rarity and value and even offers to buy. Condition is a major factor so have good pictures.

Should you post on eBay, let the auction run the full course and do not use the buy it now option or stop the auction early because of someones offer. If the item is of value, most of the higher bidding will be more toward the end of the auction.

Robin, take quality pictured of the cuffs and post them here. Add any info that you may know about their history You can remain anonymous in doing so.

Some people here are experts at valuing a particular item, and they will do so for free and anonymously... Take that info and decide your next step...
