I bought a pair of cufflinks that are Marlin (R. H. Daley) 1879, First Model. They are in excellent condition with the original key. I have never seen a pair with so much of the original plating. Three photos attached.



I have a question about one particular section of the cuffs. The part that connects the links to the actual cuffs on both sides, is stamped with an small s as pictured on all sides for a total of 4 s marks. I am wondering what this means. None of the ones I have seen for sale had this. However, none of the cuffs I have seen are in this condition. That section of the cuffs is always very worn with little to no original plating. As you can see from the pictures, one of the s marks is actually wearing off on one side as well. It is not a deep stamp or engraving. Do you have any information about this?



Also, what do you think I should price these particular cuffs? I saw a model 1 pair with the key sell on eBay for $1025 but they were not in as good as condition as these. I should tell you too, that I acquired the cufflinks from what was said to be a relation of R.H. Daley if that helps at all. The man died without any children so the cuffs were donated to charity and sold, to me.

They likely were part of the Stanley Smyth collection. Everything he owned was stamped with the letter "S". The collection was documented in the Don Stewart book.

It is likely that the cuffs are the pair from the Stanley Smyth collection as shown in the Don Stewart book. Stanley Smyth had an "S" letter metal punch and stamped most every item in his collection. I have the S&W Model 94 that is shown in the book. The serial number matches and it as the "S" stamped on each cuff. I bought them many years ago from Joe Tanner.

During the week the guy who owns this Marlin cuff emailed myself and a few people asking for their input into its history, model and type. A copy of the same email I got from him, heads this post thread. He was happy to ask me questions and then ask another round of questions after my reply but never had the courtesy to reply to my questions.

The only question I asked him was how much did he pay for it? Obviously too, too much and is now looking for some sucker to buy it to get his money back.

I also got the same email which I replied to without getting any feedback. I told the person that the Marlin handcuffs rarely sell for +$500. This is also the second version with the "standard bottle" which is less rare and expensive than the first version with the "heavy bottle".
Expecting a sales price at $1500 is nothing but stupid as it's at least three times the real value.

"What makes you say they are 1910 version? Everyone else seems to think they are model one. They are not the swivel set."

I am sure that "everyone else" didn't make a mistake and think it was the first model.
I wonder if all of us that helped him will get a dollar or two for helping if he sells them for a record price.

Oops that was me, not Anon.
The second model also came as a chain link, so just because it has a chain and not a swivel does not make it a first model.
The first model is bigger.

Hi Paul, I guess that the seller had already made up his mind what this cuff was. He obviously paid a lot for it. (LOL) Even when told by myself and others, he probably didn't want to know. And by not acknowledging the accuracy of the information, he can feel free and without guilt, write up a description for his auction and feel like a saint. And wait for the next uneducated person to part with their money.

Then, he states:

I did not buy them cheaply.****


So, which is it?

Paul--There is another earlier model with three larger links and a larger body. Also, the only marking is the date on the top of the lock cap. No mention of the maker on the sides of the cap. The one I have is missing the center key pins but someone inserted a pin in the barrel of the key and it works perfectly.

@Ron; this is really interesting! I have seen a photo of a set of Marlin with "potato chip" shaped links.
Do you say that these cuffs have an even bigger "bottle" than the normal 1st. version "heavy bottle"??

Would you mind posting a photo comparing the "early big bottle" to the "heavy bottle"?

The Marlin happen to be one of my favorite US cuffs as they are high quality stuff in the best design.

Hi Lars--I think there was a pair at the European convention last year. I'll check the sizing and post if they are larger-I thought they were and yes the links are like a potato chip.

Hi Ron,

I didn't go to that convention so I don't know.

The set I have seen on a photo is photographed together with two sets of Marlin leg irons, heavy version.

It's hard to judge the size of the bottles compared to the ordinary first version. One visible detail is that
the clevis seem to be larger and longer compared to the ordinary first version. Still, I might be wrong!

Then again Maxwell, if you wanted a Civil War Relic that looks the part for a display, that is probably what you would buy, not a mint cuff with key.
I have a few dug-up items just for the look of them, which I could sell to like minded people for more than a working model.
Each to their own I suppose.

"Concerning the price: more than US$ 1.000 for a Marlin Bottleneck at eBay is very unusual. They are more in the US$ 400 to 600 range, when in excellent condition."

I bought a pair of cufflinks that are Marlin (R. H. Daley) 1879, First Model. They are in excellent condition with the original key. I have never seen a pair with so much of the original plating. Three photos attached.



I have a question about one particular section of the cuffs. The part that connects the links to the actual cuffs on both sides, is stamped with an small s as pictured on all sides for a total of 4 s marks. I am wondering what this means. None of the ones I have seen for sale had this. However, none of the cuffs I have seen are in this condition. That section of the cuffs is always very worn with little to no original plating. As you can see from the pictures, one of the s marks is actually wearing off on one side as well. It is not a deep stamp or engraving. Do you have any information about this?



Also, what do you think I should price these particular cuffs? I saw a model 1 pair with the key sell on eBay for $1025 but they were not in as good as condition as these. I should tell you too, that I acquired the cufflinks from what was said to be a relation of R.H. Daley if that helps at all. Close inspection of this Marlin cuff reveals both of the set screws holding the lock work cases in the barrels appear to be buggered and the surrounding area is perhaps ground, filed, or sanded smooth in an attempt to mask the damage to the screws (this attempt did not work too well). The screw heads are either stripped or broken off entirely as you can see from comparing these cuffs with most any other Marlin pictured (for example, see eBay item# 111049944347). That Marlin cuff not only has the original flat-head screws intact and flush with the surfaces of the barrels, but the nickel surface finish is original and has not been subjected to the infamous Autosol polishing like this Marlin apparently has been. Other than buggered screws and an artificially polished surface finish, this Marlin truly is in "unmatched condition." Remember, this Marlin cuff will never be offered for sale again, so you had better buy them now while supplies last! Operators are standing by to take your calls.

BobR is correct about the screws that hold in the lock case as I have a friend who bought a set that was done the same way. It turn out that either lead or solder was put in the hole and then filed down/sanded. Makes me wonder if someone out there has been doing this to many pairs and we are now just seeing this.
