1887 Backstraps Darby handcuffs

Located in Tasmania.... Would have had to come out with the early settlers and believe were used in the Launceston women's prison which opened in 1832 and was closed in 1917.

Hi Charles, seeing so much time has passed between convicts in Tasmania and now, the cuff may have traveled the world in the mean time. I have 3 pair myself and live in Victoria but wouldn't claim them to be anything other than old handcuffs.

These handcuffs have been in the one local Launceston family for I understand almost 100 years so doubt the provenance can be easily verified. One of the beauties of Tasmania is with our small and long term population with many many multi generational families the provenance of such items can be easily verified.

I can understand the issues you have with items from areas with large populations.
