Ancient Indian Artifact Discovered---Someone Should Be Ashamed

A gentleman read this article and found me through the Pawn Stars presence on the Internet. He was checking on the validity of this story.
As it is apparent that these are kids toys from the 30's, the story is meritless.
The story has a comment box and currenly has 49 comments from readers expressing their shock and horror about such inhumane treatment of the Native American and in this case, a juvenile Native American with such a tortuous device.
One commentator asks "how can someone be evil/cruel enough to forge such a thing?"
Some people are aghast at the cruelty and one cried out "No more handcuffs".


I left the following comment, but there is a moderator who will review my comment and decide if it is allowable. I hope I am wrong but I somehow doubt that it will be published as I believe they will perpetuate this fictional story;



This story is wrought with bogus information.
I am not at all familiar with the plight of Native Americans as they appear in this story, but I am very well versed in the study of restraints and in this case, handcuffs.
I have made numerous TV appearances and have written many published articles on the subject.
I call tell you that these handcuffs are toy cuffs which are sold on eBay on a daily basis. They are dated from the late 1920's and 30's, but they are for kids to play cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians with. The only thing sad about the use of these toys is that they were used to lock up the play Indians which is now viewed as being politically incorrect. In past generations, it was acceptable for kids to play that game but those days are way behind us now. Eventually, it will be wrong for kids to play cops and robbers too. Kids now-a-days can't even raise their thumb and extend their index finger to make a pretend gun in school without getting 3 days off.
These toy cuffs do NOT require the use of a key and the small spring loaded tab (visible in the picture) needs to be pushed up or down to extricate oneself from the toy manacles. Any 4 or 5 year old kid pretending to be Davy Crocket or Elliot Ness (if they even know these names anymore) can figure it out.
I will reread the article and am certain to find more flaws. I am positive there are real stories about the mistreatment of the native people in the land but anyone who reads this story can go to sleep tonight knowing that nobody was really harmed or suffered in any way in this story. The bulk of the story appears to be fictional and not based on anything which can be verified as the truth.
Again, I am not claiming that the Native Americans did not have a history of oppression. They certainly did and I am not knowledgeable about the many atrocities they endured. I am just stating that as an expert on handcuffs, this particular story could never be considered true in nature as long as these toy handcuffs are being represented to be the instruments of the described oppression.




There was one comment that called this story for what it's worth and they printed it.
Maybe they will allow mine and let the truth be known.

I just hate such embellished stories when it is so painfully obvious to be just another fake handcuff story.

These cuffs look an awful lot like the old "Gardner Screw Company" handcuffs of yore. I wasn't yet born in the '20s or even the '30s, but my very first pair of handcuffs which comprised part of a play-set (cap pistol, tin badge, handcuffs), were fashioned in the same pattern. Even as a small child, the release lever seemed inane, and I would soon have my folks buy me Japanese Takeda style cuffs.

Here is an example of the same kind of cuff that is purported to be the guilty party in the above story. These appear on eBay every day.
This model cuff did precede the Gardner Screw Company and the Marx Toy Company cuffs.
The same design was made in a cast iron version and are heavier that these shown in this picture.
The "S" shaped hook is another reason why these cuffs could not hold a native American child as even a 5 or 6 year old kid could twist the cuffs open if he could not figure out how to push the tabs down. The end links are pressed into the hinges and might even be the weak link.

Maybe the person in charge of escorting the kid to the boarding school used super glue, heat shrink tubing or duct tape to secure or hide the locking tab back in the day.

Ok, since I don't have a pair to test for myself on my own children.
Here is the handcuff challenge!! And I'll probably cop a lot of flack for this.

Find a 5 year old family member who is willing to take up the challenge.
Cuff them behind their back with the release button away from their fingers, with out showing them the cuff.

How long does take them to figure out the mechanism or bend the S hook.

A very well composed response. Kudos! Sometimes it's hard to dissuade people from their beliefs. I visited the Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Mo where they had a pair of rusty Tower DL leg irons displayed as pre Civil War slave restraints. When I tried to tell the curator of their error, he wasn't interested in listening. Maybe these folks will be more accepting of the truth.

Considering that handcuffing behind the back was mostly a 1960's or later thing in this country, coupled with the fact that 5 years of age is the minimum one would be taken to a boarding school (I assume), I would say an escape is much more possible in this story than in your scenario.
I would also think that there would be quite a few cuffs being used to take these kids to the boarding school, not just the one example.
If school age kids were being escorted off to school, would they not have ordered mini-Providence Tools, or something similar?

If this story were true, I wonder about how much resistance a 5 year old kid put forth. A piece of rope may be better suited than toy cuffs which MAY have been manufactured long after the timeline in the story.

I might catch flak for this; but how horrendous is the act of cruelty by taking the kids to boarding school in the first place? Yes, the separation of the kids from their parents against their will is devastating but they were going off to school to get an education, not off to Bataan for a death march.

This story is fixated on the handcuffs itself. The real story is exactly who ordered the kids off to school and how much tact was used, or not used, while implementing this plan.

I see that I am in good company with other like minded writers.
Lets see what comments will arise from this....if they keep the postings up.

Reminds me of an article I wrote about a prison tour I gave a few years back. I wrote that the Calif. Dept of Corrections officers were very nice to us and made it fun. They showed us areas that other visitors don't get to see and how nice the grounds are (for a prison) and told some crazy stories. I also talked about the nice meal they prepared for us.

Some lady responded that there is nothing "nice" about a prison and her beloved is having a miserable time and would I refrain from saying that "we had a very pleasant time there".

I told her that no matter what side of the coin she is on, I will say what I want as long as I speak the truth and that perhaps my side of the coin is less tarnished than that of hers.

I anticipate some like behaviour from future readers of this story and comments.
