Cleaning Hiatt speedcuffs

Hello, I'm 21 year old belgian, interested in handcuffs (I don't consider myself a collector yet since I only have 2 pairs of handcuffs [asp tactical hinged and Hiatt speedcuffs model 2103]). Still I've always been quite interested in cuffs.

I've recently bought a pair of Hiatt speedcuffs model 2103, from ebay. I really like them and they are in perfect working condition. These were ex-police items, so there is a bit of damage to the polymer and the cuffs themselves aren't shiny anymore.

Is it possible to get some advice on how to clean them properly? How to remove rust between the double strands, the pawls, the keyholes,... . What solutions to use, what sprays,... . The body parts also have become grey due to corrosion, is there a way to make them shiny again?

I've read about ammonia-solutions, cola, soap solutions,... but i am not going to do anything untill i have some professional advice from this forum.

I hope this isn't off subject, but I've heard that after cuffs are cleaned, the best lubricant one can use is graphite. The reason is that graphite won't hold abrasive materials such as dust and iron/metal filings, which could further wear the metals. It also won't drip or ooze out.

Any thoughts?

I use a polishing compound called flitz. You should be able to find it at your local hardware store. It works really well i've used on several pairs of cuffs i've purchased from ebay. It should with a little elbow grease bring the steel back to a mirror finish. You might have to do it a few times to achieve the finish you want. It's as simple as rub it on and polish off, can't get much easier. As Chuck stated graphite lube works pretty good but personally i've found that since its a powder it tends to gum up after a while. I like to use an oil called Kroil but since they don't sell it in stores usually i'd go with some wd-40 or something like that. I say wd-40 because it displaces moisture and it's a good lubricant. Try Autosol. It's a polishing compund and has been discussed here before, check the before and after pics if you find the old thread. It really works wonders, your cuffs will be like new.

Hello from Nothern Europe,

to clean someone has already disassembled down the parts in the dishwasher. But previously disassembled.

I have disassembled my Speedcuffs.
Cleaned the bodies with dishwashing lotion
The Handcuff flushed with WD-40
dried
Disinfect all parts
Then the handcuff with Autosol chrome polish cleaned. (AUTOSOL is a famous trademark in Germany and Europe)

Yepp...someone has cleaned cuffs in a dishwasher.
Me.
Worked OK.
Used a good amount of WD40 to avoid rust.
That's been about 3 years ago.
Didn't have any complaints regarding cuffs not working.
