Help determining age/origin of Hiatt cuffs

My dad acquired a set of handcuffs when my grandfather passed in 2001. He said he think my grandpa got them in the 1960s but we have no idea where from. I'd love to know how old they are and maybe find out when/where they were used.

At first glance they looked small but they fit on my wrists with a little extra room (average size women's wrists). It says "HIATTS best" on one side, with "warranted wrought" and the number 54 on that same side. On the other side of the cuff it says "hard." The other cuff is the same. On the end if each locking end at the hinge is what I'm guessing is a maker's mark. It's a half moon with a design around it. The chain between the cuffs has one full link on either side with a connecting piece.

I do have a functioning key and both cuffs work perfectly. The key is oval shaped with a hole for a key ring. It says HIATT 40 on both sides. Any ideas on age? It doesn't have anything about country of origin so I'm hoping they're pre-1920. I'll attach photos.

I see that the end caps are pinned. And the chain attachment is forged into the bow, not cast as part of the bow. I have never seen any clear dating of these characteristics, but before-1900 seems accepted. The key is also an ornate, older style. Patina looks like what I'd expect for a mid 1800's handcuff.

Thank you! Have you ever seen that half-moon mark before? I saw a thread on here where people are comparing these insignias but I've only seen letters, not shapes like this half-moon. It's definitely not a "C" though.

hi erin, no I haven't seen that particular mark before. But there are lots of different marks, and unless that mark has special meaning for someone, it probably doesn't have any effect on value. Your cuffs are nice Victorian UK police "detective" cuffs, probably right now would sell in the $150-200 range on ebay, if you include nice photos. If they were mine, I'd spray them with WD40, put them in a ziplock bag, and wait another 50 years for value to increase, as it surely will.

I would say your cuffs are from about 1900. I have seen the "half moon" like marking on other Hiatt cuffs.

It is the "superintendent" lightweight model. The key does not match the cuff, but would have looked similar.
Agreed - 1900 to 1920 ish.
