Czech Prison and Cuffs

I was watching an episode of Lock-up which generally shows American prisons but in today's episode, they visited Mirov Prison which is located about 100 miles from Prague in the Czech Republic.

The prison was built as part of a castle in the mid 13th century and held its first prisoners in the early 1400's. They stated that every
time they turned a corner, the photographer kept wanting to set up a shot as each turn was gorgeous but their time was limited and they had to get inside to film.

It is the country's most maximum security prison and is nicknamed the "Czech Alcatraz".

A 5 time murderer is shown being locked up in the black version of the hinged round key handcuff.



As just about all prisoners are Caucasian, racial hostilities are very rare and they hardly have inmate fighting...except for the Romas, or Gypsies. Everyone there hates them.

The same program showed a prison in Poland that had a swimming pool and for the ladies, a cosmetology school. In most of these prisons, the prisoners get to wear their street clothes and jewelry. Conjugal visits are also not a privledge, but a right.

One of the prisons even allows for weekend get-aways. Just be back by Sunday night or they will come and get you.



Guenter, Petra and I walked into the Old Hague Prison and met with a big time cocaine dealer who was allowed to leave the prison with the understanding that he had to be back by curfew or that privilege would be taken away along with 10 more years in the big house.

Another prison in the Czech Republik had a music studio with quite a collection of nice guitars and such.



The cells semed to be larger and much cleaner than American prisons.
