Unknown Civil War Handcuffs - Who made them?

Dear fellow collectors,

I found the photos of this peculiar handcuff on my computer. I can't remember where I found them, and I apologize if I'm using them here without permission.

The question that puzzles me, though, is, does anybody know what these cuffs are, who made them or when and where they were used? I remember them being labeled as "Civil War Handcuffs". Are there any more examples around?

They appear to have come with snap-shut mechanism and a pair of pliers that was used to unlock them.

Hi Nils,

I am not sure where these picture came from, but some pictures of the same type of cuff were being circulated about the time of the last Cannon Convention.

A group of us visited the Hill collection and we took some pictures of the same cuff which is believed to be made in Mexico

I guess they'd be somewhat difficult to unlock if they're a tight fit. But interesting in the regard that it is a "hidden" locking mechanism.

I would buy these in a second very interesting
But very bad design . As stated what if the person had large wrists and even if they didn't it looks as though
You would need 3/8 to a 1/2 inch to fit the tool in to open them
and why is there 2 holes to access the lock spring. I feel like this tool does not go with these cuffs
The original could have been made much smaller I'm sure you could pick these with a paper clip which means
There is no need for an 8 in pair of modified pliers which by the way have a tread on them probly made to grip wire or some
Other material that as nothing to do with this cuff..
Why not just make the pliers smooth it would make no difference to operate the lock.
