Key positions for various cuffs

Mattatuck flay key. My key needs to be jiggled a bit so I don't know if it's original but it works.

Photo 5, plug to the left - This is the double lock position. The key is inserted and turned to the right to unlock the cuff, photo 1

Photo 1. This is the "service" position. The bow may be removed and reinserted endlessly without the cuff locking until the trigger cocks into place, photo 2.

When the trigger cocks into place, photo 2, the cuff will lock the next time the bow enters the body. The pug then turns to the 12:00 position automatically when the trigger is cocked open. This becomes the single-lock mode.

In the single-lock position (trigger activated), The plug is at 12:00 but may be turned without a proper key (clockwise) and the bow will again release. A very strong thumbnail or anything else that can turn the plug from the 12:00 position will reset the mechanism. The bow will open and close again until the trigger is activated. You can do this forever.

Photo 4 shows the back of the key turning the plug counter clockwise to double-lock the cuff as the key can not be inserted in the 12:00 position.

Photo 5 shows the plug in the double-lock position. You now need the key to release the double lock by turning the plug to the right, where it clicks in place then remove the key in that position with the bow free to move.

The last photo shows a key which works but reminds me of another cuff key.

Here is a photo of original Maltby keys:


The key to the left is the standard Maltby key (as for your cuffs), the one to right is for the heavy version.

That is not a correct function. You should only be able to turn the plug anti-clockwise from the 12.00 position which engage the double lock. To open the cuff the key has to be inserted and turned clockwise to "service position" (photo 1). I believe the lock on your cuff is broken as it can be turned to the "service position" without the key. Does both sides operate the same or is it just one side?

Both sides work the same as did another pair.
The cuffs do not go into double lock unless the plug is manually turned.
They go into single lock when the trigger is depressed
Anything can turn the plug from 12:00 (single locked) clockwise (open) or counter clockwise (double locked)

Very strange, then I don't know. Maybe they are
just single locking????

Both sides double lock when you turn the plug counter clockwise.

I've done this several times and they work the same each time.

Open until the release snaps-up. Depress the release and the bow springs shut. To double lock, turn the plug.

Am I doing something I shouldn't be?

Both sides double lock when you turn the (trunnion) counter clockwise.

I've done this several times and they work the same each time.

Open until the release snaps-up. Depress the release and the bow springs shut. To double lock, turn the (trunnion).
