#1There is a nice looking item on eBay that I considered bidding on and this item has had some activity and is currently bid up to $430 with 27 bids
Upon closer examination, I noticed that this transport Towers model has a single lock cuffs attached (by a Phelps style chain) to a pair of double lock version cuffs.
I will say that if Towers even made a set of these, they would have certainly used 2 of the same kinds of cuffs. I will say that the Towers factory did NOT make this set of cuffs.
The other item in the auction is a single Tower cuff on a come-a-long chain.
I will go on to say that the possibility exists that a jail or prison may have added the chain by in-house labor or at a metal shop of some kind.
Assuming that each cuff is worth an average of $125 each, I believe that cost of the additional 2 chains are NOT worth the $200 or more markup that they are likely to fetch.
A good metal worker can buy some old chain and make these Transport cuffs all day long.

The come-along, lead chain, whatever you wish to call it has modern welded chain links......that speaks volumes about the legitimacy of this piece. Overall, they are very nice and would be a great addition to any collection. At least they don't have little brass plats J.B. Welded to them. lol!

Hey Mark, thanks for the info!. I recently bought a Towers belly chain at an auction that looks right, but now I'm not so sure. I'm bringing it to Indy because I was hoping to find out more about it. Oh, and if you do go, be prepared to tell me what it was like working for Towers! That's cool!

Upon closer examination, I noticed that this transport Towers model has a single lock cuffs attached (by a Phelps style chain) to a pair of double lock version cuffs.
I will say that if Towers even made a set of these, they would have certainly used 2 of the same kinds of cuffs. I will say that the Towers factory did NOT make this set of cuffs.
The other item in the auction is a single Tower cuff on a come-a-long chain.
I will go on to say that the possibility exists that a jail or prison may have added the chain by in-house labor or at a metal shop of some kind.
Assuming that each cuff is worth an average of $125 each, I believe that cost of the additional 2 chains are NOT worth the $200 or more markup that they are likely to fetch.
A good metal worker can buy some old chain and make these Transport cuffs all day long.

No, the smart-ass Anon was again just being a total laughable idiot and has nothing better to do with his time but to test me on things cuff related.
Thank goodness that I am not old enough to have worked at the Tower factory but did work as a locksmith at Tower Lock and Key in Michigan, many, many years ago.
The good Anon and I were kidding around with this as the stupid idiot Anon sat in his bedroom and tried to come up with something witty, even though he just can't ever reach anything close to that goal. I actually feel sorry for him...but not too much.

Boy, those were the days.
Working at the Tower factory on the midnight shift was awesome. No bosses around to catch you screwing off.
We used to play craps on the swivel die press and the other guys would be playing poker in the plating section.
On warm summer nights, we would smoke a good cigar up on the roof.
Mac and his gang liked to pound down some malt liquors in the chain cutting room.
On April 1st, we took the stops out on the bows and welded up the slits in the bows and dropped them back off to the shipping department. We would laugh when we heard the customer call the order desk and complain that they specifically ordered the stop models.
We did the same thing to the 3 handed models except we added a 4th or even a 5th cuff that was laying around in the human resource office.
We got Charlie fired for making too many shipping errors. No one liked him anyway. I think he was a cousin of the boss too.
Nothing could be better than working at the cuff factory.
Those were the days!
