The handcuffs were modified by Houdini to ensure release. It is thought he heated them with the key in place, which destroyed the spring and enabled him to free himself.

Its usually possible to tell if handcuffs can be easily rapped, by feeling the force needed to screw the key in. Or more scientifically, by measuring the spring pull-force on the key, as discussed on this forumhttp://www.network54.com/Forum/261154/m ... arby+cuffs

This might be true as it could be with other theories. However the new owner and or anyone who saw the cuffs prior to the auction have said anything about the cuffs, so no-one knows which of about a 12 methods has been used on THIS pair.
