The item is obviously the 'pot metal' adopted by Hiatt after the end of their Derby production for police use. I think the pot metal does not have an attractive appearance. Apart from appearance, does anyone know exactly how the metal is deficient wrt steel? If its simply easier to file through, I'm not sure that is a real deficiency, its just a question of how long the filing takes.

Filing is not the reason for it's use.The metal is a zinc alloy. Pot metal is a slang term for everything that no one understands.

Zinc alloy is used because of casting cost, metal cost and finishing cost.
