The ER handcuff surely is of high historical significance and not many are known to exist, and I never had thought I would be given the chance to own one. I am very thankful to Joshua, who literally went the extra mile to make this piece available to the collectors community!

of US restraints. Your cuffs are extraordinary as they are slightly lighter (smaller) than other known ER cuffs.

The ER restraints are some of the most significant and most interesting US cuffs. The quality and workmanship is outstanding.

Lol, I'll see what I can do but to take a standard key will be a rare variant so the price goes up. I'll keep an eye out for Palmers but I just sold one and the other I know of is a number 4 so I may have gone to the well too many times for Palmers but you know how things seem to come and go in waves.

Ian, the key-hole diameter on one cuff is 9.65mm, on the other one it is a little oval, the diameter is 9.45mm, and 9.55mm after turning the caliper by 90°.

You're right, it was a dumb question and written poorly.
Some have said it's in mint condition, I assume that to mean, not cleaned,, just looked after from the time it was made. Other have suggested it has been cleaned, (i.e. wire brushed, sand blastered?)

As you have it and can see it without photographic distortion, what do you think? as new or cleaned of all brown patina?

Hi Ian,

the ER surely was not treated with a sandblaster and not with an iron brush or any other tool that more or less would distroy a cuff than help to preserve it. It also was not treated with any strong chemicals/acids etc. The edge between cleaning a cuff and over-cleaning and thus destroying it is a rather thin one. Over the years I have seen many, too many cuffs that were taken over the edge and after that more or less worthless.

When I was offered the ER I was shown a number of pictures including this one (I hope it is OK to show it, Joshua!):



You will note that there are areas below the hinge that show a brownish surface. When I received the cuff and handled it I realized that these areas can be reached by tiny tools such as brushes etc and could be cleaned if someone wanted to do so.

So, to answer your question, if someone cleaned this cuff all the way to its current condition, including the links, including the interior of the eyelets that connect chain and cuff, including the tips of the bows where the bolts go in, always staying on the right side of the edge, why would he leave out those brownish areas? They could have been cleaned as well.

No, I think these cuffs are in their original condition. The question is, why would they rust (I knew I had to use this word sooner or later!) especially there where they did? Any ideas anyone?

Hi Micheal, great photo and I see the 'stain'. My guess is that the cuff has been chemically cleaned. My reasoning is that the stained area is very recent, due to the cuff being washed and the area the hardest to dry. The key also shows the braze lines, normally this are hidden or colour blends with the dark patina of an old looking cuff. The shine of the brass weld is very common to cuffs and keys that I have chemically cleaned.

First, congratulations, Michael!

I don't believe that these cuffs were cleaned chemically. Then the rust in the hinges would have disappeared, too. For me it looks like as if the cuffs were carefully polished. Maybe by use of a compound like Autosol. This would remove the red surface rust but leave the dark patina in place.

Hi Guenter, I am suggesting that the rust formed after being chemically cleaned, which is why it's now there and RED (new rust). There doesn't seem to be a dark patina, only the grey of bare metal.

Obviously I have seen and handled the cuffs and to show a good representative of them was very difficult in photos. I don't pretend to be a knowledge metallurgist but I'll state my opinions nevertheless. I highly highly doubt these cuffs were polished nor does the cuff show any scratches/swirls/scrapes etc... The cuffs actually have a very light brown hue to them dare I say patina. I have used autosol plenty in different fashions and I do not believe that is the case here at all. A chemical cleaning could be a possibility and because I have zero experience or knowledge of the methodology I can't state one way or the other. I personally do not believe they were cleaned and the places where surface rust is present are in all the nooks and cranies where moisture would have naturally collected. I have a biased opinion but Id wager a high dollar amount they have not been polished...chemically cleaned at some point, I suppose that is possible although that seems like a lot of effort for something they were unaware had any significant value but I've certainly seen dumber actions.

I am very happy to share a few pictures of an item that I picked up from customs Monday morning:









The ER handcuff surely is of high historical significance and not many are known to exist, and I never had thought I would be given the chance to own one. I am very thankful to Joshua, who literally went the extra mile to make this piece available to the collectors community!

I also would like to thank Sarah for getting the cuff over to my place in the most secure way. You did a great job! The customs officer's face when he asked me what I expected to be in that box and I told him "a screw handcuff wrapped in a towel" was priceless!





Making the deal about this handcuff, waiting at least an eternity to finally receiving it and handling it for the first time gave me back the excitement that I felt when I was a young collector decades ago. Again, Sarah and Joshua, thank you very much!

I am quite sure, Ian, that without actually handling the ER you will not really be able to determine what was or was not done to it.
