In my mind, the cuff is an early heavy model 104 Indian/Pakistan region Sheffield pattern.

These cuffs are most likely authentic Indian Darby cuffs. The Indian Darby are unfortunately also the
prototype for the modern Paki copies so it's very important to look at details.

First, what stampings do you find? Look very carefully, use a magnifying glass and good light, as some stampings
might be very hard to see.

Here are some of the significant details to look for:

1. The key pattern. The key has often, but not always, external threads.
2. The general shape which differ from ordinary British Darby cuffs.
2. The Stampings. Authentic Indian Darby cuffs usually have several stampings on different places (see photos below).

Old NZ police or prisoner handcuffs. They were in my grandfather's possession when he passed in 1970 (He was the son Irish immigrants).That's all I know about the handcuffs.

They are cold metal and heavy. The key is old style screw in to lock or unlock and in good working order. The cuffs and key have markings and numbers on it but I don't know what they mean so please don't ask cheers.

Thank you Lars, - getting a better idea now.
If I was going to bid on these it would only be as a novelty item for a friend's birthday (He has recently written a book which included convicts on a ship to Australia) I just thought it would be a fun item, I am not a collector and didn't even realise that there were collectors of such items. The auction made reference to Irish immigrants and I suspect that they are not linked to the convicts out of the UK. Not that it matters. I can see now that expert opinion would be needed to identify if they were replicas, but as this doesn't matter too much to me it is not important. I note that there is a very different coloring from the picture you posted, is this likely a different metal?

The the color of Lars's cuffs is polished clean steel. The others have a patina showing there age.

Sounds like this guy is spruiking his own wares, otherwise he'd keep quiet and bid instead of trying to ramp up the price.

So Lars' were made in Aligarh, India in 1944, the other side of the key has a number then'42, so these were made in Deli, india in 1942. Both have the Broad Arrow mark.

How can he be doing that? - the only 'non quiet' thing he has done is post a description on an auction in New Zealand. I AM THE one trying to find out about the handcuffs, which appears to be some kind of crime to brave nameless 'anonymous' posters. I AM bidding on the things for a GIFT for MY father's 70th birthday as a novelty thing. What I pay is my own business and I will only bid as far as my own personal limit I have set myself. I googled 'handcuffs' and found this site with a forum with what I assumed would be knowledgeable people and I have found some good information from Lars and Ian (ppl who put their names to their posting) - but WOW, if this is the bitchy world of collectors I am damn glad I am not one. Maybe the forum admin should ban anonymous posters as you can't tell one from another.

For what it is worth you have been very helpful! I hope I do win the handcuffs I think they will make a great present. Because my dad likes vintage and olde world type things, a few years ago I found an antique fire extinguisher - the expression on his face when he opened it was priceless. Sure beats a box of chocs or socks for your birthday.

I was curious, if these were made in India, does that mean they were likely used in Indian prisons or police? Or were they exported to the world? Could they still have been used in England/Ireland years ago if they were forged? manufactured in India?

Lots of eastern cuffs have been shipped around the world but not as regulation cuffs to be used in police forces or military or prison.

These might have been brought to kiwiland as a souvenir from someone who did service over there. (we may never know the history)
