Inventory List from Freising Prison, 1730 - Germany

Dear friends,

we recently took a trip to Freising, half an hour North of Munich and stumbled upon the old prison. It's only open on Saturday, and we were unfortunately there on a Sunday.

What I found interesting, though, was an inventory list of the prison and torture room from 1730.



It reads:

Interrogation Room

1 cruxifix
3 clerical paintings, with gold frame
4 chairs
4 benches
1 table, covered with red cloth
1 double curtain to the torture room
1 bell


Torture Room

1 Set of screws, so old they cannot be used anymore (!)
1 Set of thumbscrews
1 rope and hook (for stringing up)
1 rack for whipping


Office and cell block

3 body belts
14 old and new leg cuffs, with 12 chains
8 small leg cuffs for boys, with chains (there was a notorious witchcraft trial in Freising in 1723)
6 large padlocks
16 medium padlocks
4 handcuffs with chains
8 small padlocks for fiddles and handcuffs
2 neck collars with chains
3 simple fiddles
1 double fiddle
4 rods / birches
12 new rods / birches with iron tips, bought 1721
1 ?
4 ? devices of shame
1 ? cart ?

We finally got the chance to tour the inside. It was used until the 1960s.
They only offer tours in the Summer, on Saturdays at 2 and 3 pm. We were the only visitors.
A club has taken over the restoration of the premises.





Interrogation room. The executioner was paid be the number of strokes he delivered.

Steve,

what period would you estimate for cup shackles in general? Would 1700-1900 be far fetched? It seems in some places they might have been used up to WW 2.
Other guesses here?

Hi Nils,

I have one in my collection that dates to the early 1500's.

Cup shackles were certainly used during WW2 and some of the types used during WW2 may have been 1940's manufacture and others older and pressed back into service as needed.

I have no doubt that in parts of Germany and Austria cup shackles were used into the 1700's and even the 1800's.
