I can see that someone is using Ron's name to comment. Not funny either. Going by the spelling of Ass, it is probably another American, because English spellers use arse.

Although I know the English story behind the term Darby from Joe's wonderful book, Darby is the US pronunciation of the slang Derby, which was a generic slang for restraints.
So, to me, Darby and Darcy are both odd jokes which do not accurately describe these Birmingham made handcuffs.
99% of old English manufactured "D-shackle" "snap-lock" "screw-key" type handcuffs have no connection with the County of Derby or "Father Derby" and were almost exclusively made in Birmingham, Warwickshire. (the second "w" is silent for you Americans)

The story of "Father Derby", which I alluded to, which Joe might like to elaborate on, still has its place in history. And in the ever evolving English language, I think the term Darby is here to stay because it is becoming more widely used on eBay. But ask anyone outside of this Forum what a Darby is, and they will most likely say its a horse race or a hat.

I have not seen the "Darcy" reference here in a while. Why the sudden dissatisfaction?

To Paul and all, I will try to explain.

There is another side of the story about "Darcy" and it probably won't fade into the sunset anytime soon.

The use of the term (that the poster is upset about) began after I was fortunate to appear as an appraiser on the popular Pawn Stars show.
I did a Ball and Chain appraisal on "Rick's Bad Day" and a McKenzie Mitt on "Hot Air Buffoons", both in Season 2 (2010). I did an off screen Darby appraisal too.

As I live in San Diego and the show is taped in Las Vegas, the producers located a magician that performs in Vegas willing to do subsequent handcuff related episodes as the logistics made sense. Directly after Murray the Magician airing, he claims that he had higher ratings than I and that was the reason they switched handcuff experts. I say that his claim was false because he stated this fact before the ratings could possibly be calculated.

This is where the rivalry and the word "Darcy" begins:
This Murray is a stage magician and has appeared in various stages all over the world. His act and appearance is odd but it is memorable to those who see him perform. As magicians do, they come up with wild and funny stories as part of their act. There isn't much fact or historic accuracy in a magicians act, particularly his.

Apparently Murray is not a handcuff collector nor does he frequent these pages or attend any of the cuff conventions or auctions that lots of us do to gain any knowledge about cuffs. He set himself up as a handcuff expert for the TV show, but in reality his ability to educate his audience is very limited.

On this Darby appraisal, he confused the word "Darby" with "Darcy" and in my opinion, gave a dreaded appraisal and embarrassed the HC collecting community. He explained that he "met" a production assistant named Darcy on the show and as the show takes hours to tape and edit, used the "Darby" name repeatedly minus one time and "that the producers used his blunder" in the final take as he confused the most common style cuff used in England with a P.A. he just met a few minutes before his last taping segment.

I called the show staff after the show aired and asked to speak to Darcy, the P.A. and he told me that no such Darcy was available to speak because they never had a Darcy working there.

On other episodes, this Murray gave away "Houdini secrets" by explaining that HH had a ring of 167 keys that was capable of opening "Every lock in the world" and other nonsensical untruths.

I resent his appearance as I believe I was as factual as I could be and spend lots of time researching the cuffs I appraised to make the show accurate and true while Murray comes on and grandstands with his crap.

I realize that some on HC.org are sick of the "Darcy" thing and I think my dissatisfaction of the Murray thing has passed, but between the friends that I have made here, "Darcy" will live on from time to time. It is pretty funny!

The term Darcy was used by a handcuff "expert" while appearing on the TV show Pawn Stars about a year ago. We all know the term should have be Darby. It has been a running joke with many collectors. A search on the term should bring up several posts.

Anyway this post is by me. I place my real name at the end of my posts.

Hey Mark, my friend was at a magic convention when halfway through the show, Darcy Boy stood up from his seat in the audience, and stopped the show by announcing as loud as he could, "WELL EVERYBODY, I HAVE TO GO NOW!!!GOTTA GET READY FOR MY NEXT SHOW!!! SEE YOU LATER EVERYBODY!!!" he then waved to the confused crowd who didn't give a rat's ass that he was even there, and the person performing stopped dead at the interruption, and the whole crowd was stunned that someone would actually be that rude!! Imagine someone doing that in the middle of a play or even a movie!

Anyway, I agree with you completely, and let's hope that Darcy eventually makes it into the dictionary as another word for "Douchbag"!

Murray made a mistake and said the wrong word, if he did his research he wouldn’t have. If he didn’t want to look like a fool, he would have edited it out. He didn’t do either.

Yes, Murray made a mistake. He actually made 2 mistakes. His second, was to lie to cover up his first mistake. That was not an act of ignorance, it was deliberate act.

A person in a similar situation should admit he made a mistake when called out on it. Difficult to do: Yes, but that is what bigger people do.

He deserves the ridicule he earned solely by himself. Same exact thing happened to Nixon.

People here may not understand it and may want it to go away but complaining about it will not make it disappear.

I watch Pawn Stars quite often and enjoyed seeing you on there. If I may ask, what would your appraisal have been on Houdini's handcuffs? Do you think Murray was too light or too high on his appraisal? I saw this episode just the other day and was wondering about that.

Thanks for asking and for the nice comment.
I really don't remember what handcuff was appraised by Murray. He did appraise a Darby cuff on his first episode and this is where there the Darcy thing emanated from.
I am not sure if this is what you are referring to. I assume he did several other appraisals.
If you know the name of the episode, I can watch it and give you my opinion.
At this point, it would be difficult to say what that one is worth.

I divide Houdini handcuffs into 4 subdivisions. These are grouped by importance and matching prices.

The first group of cuffs are the famous cuffs and are one of a kind and unmistakable. They are so important that each of them has been named. This would include the Russian Manacle, Mirror Cuff and French Letter Cuff. In my opinion, I would say that these are worth well in excess of $25,000.

The next group would be The Handcuff King Killers like the Bean Giants, Lilly Iron and others that HH had fixed to take a different key so that HH's competition could be squelched. There are also other cuffs that have been sold at auction and are unique. They have provenance to HH and they are in the $10,000 to $20,000 range. The provenance MUST be there. A picture of HH wearing them or documented somehow. Some of these would have come from the Nugent/Wresh collection. They would have been numbered and cataloged if going back to HH.

The next group are average cuffs but come from a HH auction or from a noteworthy collector or historian. At auction these go anywhere from $2,000 to $7,500. Many of these may be traced back to Hardeen (Houdini's brother) and may come with a letter of authenticity stating that they are Houdini owned. These could be or they might not be, but proving it one way or another is no longer possible. Proving that some are not is possible if the cuff was manufactured after 1926, when HH died. Embarrassingly, these occasionally turn up in premiere auctions. One has to also ask if Houdini really kept over 100 pairs of Towers.

The last group are those cuffs that are seen on eBay and swap meets. This group contains average period cuffs but only come with a story of how someone's uncle was friends with a famous magician and he certifies that HH owned them at some point.

In my opinion, these would appraise these for just the current value of the cuff without the story because when it comes time to sell them, that is what any buyer should offer you.

There are exceptions to all the above but these are in line with what my experience shows.

With regard to the Darby/Darcy dispute/quarrel, I do trust the same will not involve the haberdashery item of a Derby (a/k/a Bowler).

To me, a Darcy is nothing more than an early Peerless knock-off.

In any event, I do find it disturbing these days, when I wear a Homburg, the uneducated refer to it as a Derby, and even worse, as a Darby.

In such events, I just walk away to quietly igonore their ignorance.
