Does anyone have a union hwd. type stop lock with the oblong link and swivels,marked TOWER DOUBLE LOCK
and looking for opinion as to weather all oblong link were made by only UNION HWD. or do you think J.J. TOWER made some before the takeover !

The patent papers mention several methods were tried. Another one was a hole for a pin to be inserted to stop the bow from being locked. I have a pair of these with a neatly factory drilled hole which will accept a pin, paper clip, etc. There is no information as to wither this pin was tethered to the cuff or was just a loose pin to be inserted and removed by the user.

I have tried to post a picture, but Photobucket will not operate properly and for me. The photo is there but I can not access it for posting or choose another.

Here is the photo of my Tower Patent Stop. A paper clip was used for the pin to stop the bow from closing.

Photobucket still does not function as it use to for some reason but I got around the problem.

THE TYPE I talked about above is a normal patent stop only union HWD. STYLE, RON or any one else, ever seen one ? are they common ? this is the only one I remember seeing but all I have to go by are the photos I've seen! Haven"t seen other collections first hand as to touch and hold and look LOL

The only bow stops I have seen are on the "old style" Tower cuffs, none on the single link Union Hardware cuffs.

This discussion goes back about 10 years, and I am happy to have just won the polished steel version of this fairly hard cuff to find.
This original Chain Tower Double Lock Cuff was purchased from the Forte Collection auction.
I have had the Union Hardware version (with the swivel link) and the plated chain Tower for a while and hope to find the plated version to complete the factory regular issue set.
Arioch's long chain model is a neat item, but I don't know why a transport cuff would need the patent stops as this is mainly needed for an arrest style cuff.  

The Patent Stop seems to be a response to the Bean improvement that allowed the cuffs to be closed but unlocked until the office was ready to arrest the subject. 
Apparently, the Tower design was thought up and an application for this patent occurred just days after the Bean patent was applied.



"Handcuffs and shackles usually shut with a spring-lock, and sometimes a refractory prisoner will in his struggles force the bow of the shackle into its place before it is on his person. This necessitates the unlocking of the handcuff' by the officer under very disadvantageous circumstances before he can put it on the prisoner. Efforts have been made to apply a stop in the lock or on the radius bar to prevent this; but the same is not reliable and can be operated by the prisoner so as to be useless for the purpose intended.

Our present invention relates to a stop upon the bow of the shackle, which stop is so placed that it allows the end of the bow to enter the opening in the radius-bar to prevent the bow becoming bent but the stop-prevents the bow passing in sufficiently far for the first notch to be caught by the spring-lock, so that the officer can open the bow the instant the same can he slipped over the prisoners hand."

I have had this set of Tower's for many years and wondered about the holes factory drilled in each cuff.  I posted the information many years ago after reading the patent paper several times.  The papers mention three ways to do a bow stop, the main method is described in this thread.  The second method is with an attachment that moves into place.  I have only seen one of this type and the owner posted the information on the Forum many years ago.  The third method is to have a hole where a pin can be inserted to prevent the closure of the bows.  This is what I have along with several of the type previously mentioned.
