A very odd Hamburg 8

Yesterday I received this tiny brass Hamburg 8 which I recently won on eBay. This set is much smaller compared to the standard version manufactured by Kayser.

It's made of brass and my impression is that it's very much handmade. The key hole is similar to the Kayser flat key version and the same key perfectly operates the lock even on this cuff.
Before I bid on it, I feared the magic people in the past might have destroyed it by gimmicking but it's fortunately untouched and works properly.

So, what is this cuff? Is it a very early version of the Hamburg 8 made by German Kayser? Is it even the Kayser Hamburg 8 prototype?

Any thoughts?? John Bushey! I'm told you are the Hamburg 8 man! I sent you an email but didn't hear back from you.

To Hi, clearly these are not for sale, but even if they were, I'm quite sure a simpleton such as yourself would have neither the funds to purchase them or anything worthwhile to trade.


Lars, fantastic cuffs, a very interesting variation. I think they are so different to the Kayser Hamburg 8 that they are probably from another manufacturer. If they were a prototype they would most likely be a more standard size.

Yes, they have once been plated and small remaining of plating can be seen in several spots.

The most interesting thing is how the standard flat Kayser key perfectly fit the key hole and
operates the lock. I really wonder what company is the manufacturer.

Only Lars could come up with such a nice orphan as this.

When I see brass I think Patent model but I don't think that applies here. Based on how ill fitting some of it looks I keep thinking that it is a proper cast, but an early one where there were still some kinks to work out. Particularly the work on the bow hinges. The conical post seems like a second choice at best. A picture showing it folded would show off the careful thought that went into chamferring the outer edges.

You are probaly right that this cuff is not a prototype but it's for sure very odd.
