Are handcuff keys illegal in Florida?

I just read on a Facebook page (Yes, I know that is not a dependable place LOL) that handcuff keys are illegal in Florida. They also say that if you get arrested there and possess one, you can have an additional charge.

Is there any truth to this, or is it the typical Facebook nonsense?

Oh, so how wonderful lawyers and their legal definitions are.

Yeah, in Florida, it is illegal for a whoever or whatever to have a "handcuff" key.

And there is indeed an expansive definition of "key", which could include a bobby pin.

But they don't define "handcuff".

Peerless? And if so, Model 1, Model 2 or Model 3? S&W? Or maybe an old Tower, or a Bean, a Bodkin, Mattatuck or perhaps an import, such as a Hiatt, Frogatt, Berliner.

But, perhaps, they are talking about the so-called Universal Handcuff Key.

Those folks in Florida are so perceptive in combatting crime.

This incident is what has led to Florida having a strict "handcuff key" law:


Hank Earl Carr (January 31, 1968 – May 19, 1998) was a convicted criminal who, on May 19, 1998, shot his girlfriend's four-year-old son with a rifle, was arrested, and then escaped from his handcuffs and killed two Tampa detectives and a Florida state trooper.

His handcuff key was on a hidden gold chain.

On the trip back to the police department, with Bell and Childers in the front seats and Carr sitting behind them, handcuffed in front, Carr successfully unlocked his handcuffs with a key he carried on his person, he then disarmed Childers by snatching his Glock handgun from his shoulder holster.

In the struggle that ensued, Carr shot both officers in the face, killing them at the scene.
