Bean Ball & Chain

I found these pictures of a Bean ball and chain. This has the twisted chain with swivel and a marked 50# ball. The interesting part is has the complete set of leg irons, which the catalog does offer. The link into the ball does not show very well, but it looks like it is set deeply into the ball.

It looks real to me. What do you think?

There was a heavy thump at my front door and a not too happy delivery person. The ball and chain arrived and it is indeed a factory made piece. The locks work and there is even some original plating on the cuff and chain. I think I'll call it my hernia special.

The history is that they were salvaged from a scrap yard, many years ago, in Springfield, Ohio. Most likely, they were used at the Clark County Jail which is the largest in the area and dates back far enough.

As I was researching, I came across the picture posted below---I think the Brits have the right idea.

You might have changed the del'y person's mind by pointing out that some unlucky people many years ago, had that Ball & Chain locked to their ankles ....

Ron, Shame on you!
Being that the anon poster seems to be a "know it all" and obviously had a much higher IQ than either you or the entire UPS staff, you should have known that you should have stopped living your day to day life so that you could have sat at home for a week and been on the lookout for the "del'y guy so that you could have warned him that the ball and chain was once attached to an unfortunate's leg sometime in history. I think he would understand this logic.

As I am not as smart as Anon either, I wonder if the message to him should have been given before the "del'y" g'y got out of the del'y truck or just before he plopped it down on the porch. I am sure that either way, the del'y g'y would have changed direction and sent the ball and chain back to the seller as it is not nice to send items that were once attached to a limb of an unfortunate.

Oh, wait, I guess this applies to all vintage restraint's.

Before I was "involuntarily retired" several years ago, and thus had to part with a restraint collection which I spent nearly 35 years assembling, one of the last pieces which I was looking for was an actual 35 ~ 50lb ball and chain
in decent -AND- working condition.

BTW .......... I've been a "lurker" on these forums for the past 12 years, and have been "saved" a time or two by the knowledge of various posters. W/O doubt, this IS THE best place on the net to expand one's knowledge of vintage restraints!

These Anon postings are a bunch of crap. It is no wonder that so many collectors do not post and information here just for that reason.

I have had several emails from collectors asking about details of how the irons are connected to the chain and I will send them photos and this will be my last post on this Forum. There are too many jerks out there so I hope this will be read before Joe L. takes this thread down.

To all my friends out there it's been a pleasure and I look forward to seeing some of you at the lock shows. To all the Anons out there go fuck your self.

For the record: I'm the first "anon" poster, NOT the second "shame on you" individual!!!

1) I'm truly sorry for your decision not to post anymore. Again, it was never my intention to offend anyone on the forum. And in my rush to post the first apology, you may have noticed I mis-spelled "original" .......

2) Regardless of where you go on the net, you will see on most forums even when registration is required, that people use unidentifiable screen names FWIW.
