Ball & Chain

I'm thinking about selling this.

It has a protrusion about the casting, for the pin to be driven through - so it's not a cannonball.

The chain, which is evenly worn on every link, seems to be the right length, and because there's wear from everything moving around I don't believe it was a hanging weight. It was articulated when in use.

The size is 4 inches across and it weighs about 10.5 pounds.

It is either a gate weight or a windmill weight.

It's a fishing sinker for going after the BIG ones!

It is a sliding scale weight that slid along on top of a flat bar. The bolt was used to fix it in place, but it has been used for another purpose here judging by the wear and patina.

I don't know about the sliding weight because the ring has worn the pin, on the underside, to a rounded shape. All the links have wear that's greater then just from hanging. It appears that the wear from each one is caused by the next one.
That's why I don't think it was just hanging. If so, then just the top link would be worn.

I'm going to look at the other possibilities though. I lived in Williamsburg for a while and I know what those gate balls look like. They're all about 3 inches and just have a U bolt on top.

So I'll take it on myself to further look
