HIATT Handcuff Help Please

Hi there,

I have a pair of HIATT handcuffs and I was hoping someone might be able to help me or give me some more information about them.

They are stamped HIATT to one side and they also have the numeral 5 stamped on.

They key works by screwing into the body and then pulling the key back to release the pin - this is why someone has put a toggle onto the key I presume.

Can anyone tell me anything about their age etc?

They also have 3 links... does that make them rare?

Hi,

The links look hand wrought too - i.e. they have hammered marks around them.

I notice the chain links are without a swivel, and the cuffs are attached in a fixed 'opposite' orientation ie one keytube faces down and the other up. This is the usual Hiatt orientation, I think: Hiatt bar-cuffs and solid-state cuffs are oriented the same 'opposite' way. I can't see if the plugs are pinned, which would be normal on older Hiatts.

Pinned plug is not a norm.

I do like quirky cuffs, but in my opinion this pair does not have much going for them, The key and chain are not original and the cuffs are in pretty bad shape. Maybe they've been exposed to salt spray or displayed outdoors. Having said that, I recently bought a pair with two links joining them, and in much worse shape, but the two links were large and the same dimensions as a link in Australian riveted leg irons. Maybe mine were repaired by the "Convict Department" or I may be wishing. Yours appear to be an old repair also, but is the chain pitted like the cuffs?. Swivels were the norm, with no particular orientation. Hard to determine age, but let's say antique.

any chance of a clear photo of the chain links? looks like the type of chain on shopping carts coin locks.

Hi,

The links are hand wrought and not modern - probably made by a blacksmith at some point.

From what you are all saying it looks like they are 19th century cuffs but have had quite a tough life!
