For practicality locked with conventional nuts and bolts, hence the spanners.

Acquired more than 11 years ago in brand new condition. Out of production and banned from use in Taiwanese prisons. Remaining used leg irons supposedly were all destroyed.

Being a bit curious, I did a bit of searching on the whole Taiwan prison leg irons thing.

It would appear that the leg irons used in Taiwanese prisons were simply bent around the ankles. They were pulled apart with a machine if/when they needed to be removed. I have found no evidence of any hinged leg irons being used.

I am not an expert on the matter. These are just my observations.

Actually, I did find a picture sometime of the Taiwanese justice minister trying a set of these on at a visit to a jail. Will have to look for it.

Bending leg irons around ankles with some device is done in Thai prisons. Saw a clip once about convicted drug smugglers in Thailand where a set was applied, so I am pretty sure about that.

You could maybe find a picture somewhere on the web of a Taiwanese Prison Neck Collar in the same style as the leg irons on display here. It seems my copy of such a picture unfortunately got lost.
