As the previous response says. There are many different threads, including left hand thread. Someone like Ian McColl can determine the thread and make a key, but you need to post him the cuff. Firstly, if you buy a cuff without a key, assume that there might be something wrong with the cuff and pay accordingly, then if you get a key that works, that is a bonus.

I have made several replacement keys for Hiatt 104 Darby cuffs. I made a tap that is 7/32 diameter by 18 Teeth per inch and this works in several pair of Hiatt 104 cuffs. I have made keys in both steel and brass with my tap but the tap is home made and isn't as strong as a professionally made tap. Custom taps can be ordered, but they are costly. . The 7/32nd by 18 TPI is key won't work in the adjustable Hiatt darby cuffs (115s) nor will it work in several older Hiatt 104 cuffs that I have had over the years.

It is also necessary to have the pair of cuffs in hand in order to fit the key so that it screws in the correct amount. Even with the correct diameter and thread pitch, the length varies. If the length is incorrect, the key will screw in the cuffs but it must be pulled out to open the cuff.

I also found that some of the KUB reproduction Darby cuff keys have the correct diameter and thread pitch as some of the older Hiatts. The outside diameter is too large, however, and it is necessary to turn down the outside of the key in order for it to work.

Bottom line - it is certainly possible to make your own Darby keys, but it is difficult and takes lots of time.

Is it possible to make a Darby key by using a tight fit thin copper pipe and screwing it to plastically adjust to the handcuffs screw?

Nearly all things are possible but all things have cause and effect.

Yes you can but as it will not continue to work as a real key why would you want to?? unless you know what type of a material the cuff is made of (most people don't or cannot tell) you might strip the tread of the locking mechanism and an authentic key won't work in the future. Though copper is softer than steel it will still have an effect of damaging the thread because it will be bearing on the max diameter and not the minor diameter of the thread. Also without a leading thread inside the copper to get it started on the locking bolt, the copper tube will go around and around many times before getting a grip (if any) each rotation doing more harm to the cuff.

Then once the cuff is ruined, then it may appear on ebay for some unsuspecting buyer to get, never knowing that it was damaged because someone had an ill thought out plan.........

before you try that............. can you post a photo of your cuff or do you know what material its made of. a photo might provide a clue.

Also even if you yourself are not intending to sell the cuff in your life time.
It will change hands at some time in the future. We are only caretakers of these historical item.

It is Hiatt handcuffs I think one of last model. I bought onother one Hiatt adjustable with Hiatt "A" key. This key works perfectly. My question is. Does anyone have such a key on sale? I am looking for this.....

Hi, thanks for the added info. It is most likely your cuff is made from alloy (you could check with a magnet). I would assume that the locking bolt is also of alloy and prone to having the thread stripped by incorrect use and over use. "A" keys were normally 115 pattern and fig eight, what was it that you have??

just noticed your post with link to photos. Your cuff appears to be steel (115 model) is that a broad arrow on the side?? Is the locking bolt steel or brass?
