Is it true about shimming?

This was in my youtube feed thismorning about shimming handcuffhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3gR4lQlBuA and I have seen many youtubes show shimming and it looks easy. This man says this is un true that some hand cuffs are tolerence or somethings and wont make a shim work well and some can totall prevention of using shims. Im not really knowing too well if this is a trick youtube trying to trick people to not shim or if this is truthfull advisement.

Can someone have any opinions to share with this?

Like other kinds of lock picking, shimming is a matter of skill and knowledge. Some cuffs are very easy and most anyone could shim them open with just a bit of practice. Other companies have indeed taken a lot of care to prevent shimming. This does not mean an expert with the proper tool can not open them, but most people can not.

Of course the best tool is always the key.

thankyou for your message back from mine. SO if the video is good ill try to and pay more attention to the watching of this. I was very unsure since this only is 1 video who says this things about shiming whereas I never hear this before. So this seems more complexed like lock picking I think. A little bit disappointed with this. oh well I think this was the correct time for me to see this information.

Nothing is always easy or always hard. It depends on you, your skill level, your access to certain tools. I bet those last handcuffs listed could be picked with a thin enough shim. It would have to be something incredibly strong but thin though, else it would crumple and be worthless. But it is likely possible, because a forked shim, thin enough to get over those two flaps mentioned on the video, would then be in a position to disengage the pawl bars.

At the same time, an easy to shim pair of handcuffs like those black ones may struggle if you have a really thick shim, or if your shim is worn out, or has rough edges or you have no clue how to use it and stick it in and wonder why the handcuff doesn't magically pop open for you.

There are some copies of S&W handcuffs with very small gaps in which 0.3 mm shim can't be inserted. On the other hand, for handcuffs with divided pawl like Yuil or CTS Thompson Tri-Max there is special shim with a cut. Chinese clone of H&R handcuffs has a gear instead of the pawl, so shimming is impossible. Some old models of Spain Star handcuffs had a protective gear in front of pawl to block shim. As you can guess, double locked handcuffs also can't be shimmed at all.

@Rasberius The video shows Yuil. I doubt a split shim would even work because of the staggered metal tab things. It's like they wanted to make the most shim protection they could. Btw as I recall seeing on a TOOOL talk on handcuffs, Yuil used to have the crushing gear in the front but they removed it from the design due to problems. Not sure what problems they are though.
