Mark, it's funny but I actually store my old Swedish shackles in the basement as there is no room for them elsewhere.

Many of them are the same as seen in Nils' photos. Here is a part of my Swedish selection of shackles.



One feature, which is typical for Swedish shackles, is that many of them are covered with leather. Probably to be more "humane".

We even had leather covered Hiatt cuffs. I'm not sure however the leather work was made at the factory or here in Sweden. In any case,
it's extremely professionaly made and very tight around the cuffs.



One interesting thing about leather is how well it can be preserved if taken care of. All leather in the photos is still very smooth and movable. Then keep in mind that these are well over 130 years old. Maybe more. I add a special conservation leather oil to them every second year or so to preserve them. When the leather is "dead", which mean it's hard, it can't be "saved" and smooth again. No matter how much oil is put on them. It's like the parrot in Monthy Phytons's Flying Circus - stone dead.

Lars,
You have a very nice assortment of older leather wrapped items.

I will post a pic of my leg iron.
Mine has an ER lock and I should try to find a period padlock from your neck of the woods.
Maybe it is easier for you to find one for me.

When I bought them, I was puzzled by the pristine condition of the leather.
I was sure it was added later but the seller insisted that the leather was very old.
I trusted him and am happy to have a set.
He even X-rayed the leg irons to see if there was a repair made with the addition of the leather to hide the damage or repair.
It checked out with a clean bill of health.
Good idea on the leather conditioner. I have had these for a while and never did a thing with them to preserve.
I have a tack shop nearby and I can ask what they use for their saddles and such.

This is the only leather wrapped leg irons in my collection.

As stated above the E.R. lock is nice but is out of place with these leg irons as each item is from 2 continents and very doubtful that they were originally paired together.

I would love to find an original padlock that could have been the type used with these leg irons.
