I'm thinking of getting a pair to replace my Yuil aluminum cuffs because I hate them, the fact they look bad, the key mechanism is not the same as their super secure normal metal versions, so I would like another light pair of hinged cuffs to replace them in my main collection. I am just curious as to their claim of them being as tough and durable as their steel models. As far as yuil, their aluminum are IN NO WAY as tough and durable as their steel models, I could actually put them on and yank one side open unless they are double locked and neither side swing through perfectly. Aluminum is worthless. You can bend aluminum easy as breathing and it will all snap. Nobody is going to make real cuffs from the stuff. Trust me.

Even with the old M-925/M-926 S&W cuffs ? The owners of these aluminium cuffs seemed very satisfied with these strong models. Despite their lightness, only 100 g.

Well, pilot, all I can say is my Yuil aluminum versions I can single lock and if I yank hard enough I can slip right right cuff and I hear it skating over the pawl bars. Also the locking mechanism not only is a bad design compared to the normal weight models, but it is not really reliable and the keys that came with it struggle. The keys that came with my Y01-K model cuffs work fine. So I just have a low opinion of aluminum yuil cuffs. My only hope is other brands are not as slack in quality and design.

What a load of rubbish what ever your name is. You clearly have no understanding on Aluminium Handcuffs. Modern cuffs supplied by Peerless, TCH etc use an aluminium alloy, many of these are suitable for use in the aerospace industry need I say more. The TCH range have undergone considerable research and surpass the NIJ standards with flying colours. I would have no hesitation in recommending the TCH range of handcuffs whether steel or aluminium alloy for arrest purposes.

You bring up an interesting point Chris Gower. If a 20 stone body builder could not break steel/nickel cuffs but could break "some" aluminum cuffs, that even sounds a bit bad to me. I assume NIJ takes into consideration the strength of people, the strength people are capable of? There are a lot of muscle-freak criminals out there in gangs and what not. If I were in law enforcement I would not want cuffs that will snap. Now, my cuffs are just for collection and admiration not actual hardcore on the street usage. That being said I am not interested in rinkidink cuffs. Anything I get (hopefully) is NIJ standard.

With what has been said so far, my hopes are that the TCH 930 will be really strong especially if they "exceed" NIJ requirements. But if the TCH 930 could be broken it would cheapen them in my eyes and I would not want to buy them. I'm sure you know what I mean. I believe NIJ standard is a single standard right? Not one for steel and one for aluminum etc? So if TCH even meets NIJ standards then they should be as good, in every way as non-aluminum models? Is my reasoning correct?

French Police official Rivolier and GK handcuffs have aluminum body with steel movable strand. If they were not strong French police would not have used them. TCH 930 are the same - aluminum body with movable steel strand. Dutch Police official Lips handcuffs are the same - aluminum body and steel strand. 2200 N (NIJ requirement) of force will lead to a fracture of the bone, rather than handcuffs breaking.

one of the biggest problems with standards is that some companies that could make a really good product will reduce the product so it just makes the grade, no more no less. This happened with safe in England at the turn of the last century. nearly all NIJ cuffs are easy to pick, within seconds. If standards were supposed to be taken serious, then better mechanism and not keyhole both sides would be around.

So the fixed double strand would be aluminum but the single strand that moves would be steel or what ever is the non-light-weight metal? Does the double strand being aluminum provide extra strength or something compared to the solid single strand? Not sure what the difference would be.

As far as yuil, their aluminum are IN NO WAY as tough and durable as their steel models, I could actually put them on and yank one side open unless they are double locked and neither side swing through perfectly. Really bad. How would TCH likely be in these departments as far as aluminum models?

Steel density : 7,8. Aluminium density : 2,7. To equal volumes, aluminium is three more time lighter. To equal mass, I think it is stronger, so it's possible to obtain steel strength with less mass.

But we have to account with technological choices. Almost all the French cuffs I own are steel-aluminium "hybrids", but current models weigh as so much than american steel cuffs (around 300 g). And are more expensive (less cuffs produced for a smaller market, complex lock, and aluminium itself is costly).

To my knowledge : -almost- full aluminium cuffs (always a little steel for link and axis) : S&W M-925/M-926 ; AHC A-105 & A-550 ; Peerless-300, aluminium model. S&W and AHC seemed to have good models (P-300 were recalled, so they are uncommon collectables). And French "La Policière" (maybe also Presto Lyon ?), based on the american Bockin (steel?) cuffs.

Hybrid cuffs : all French models since about 1940s (copied on german cuffs ?). Korean KCH ; and other models noticed uppermost (Lipps, TCH, Yuil? ...).
