I tried searching through the old forum posts for information on the Phelp's handcuff and didn't find much of anything. I was mainly looking for a photo of the 1st model. The only pics that I found looked just like the 2nd model below. If anyone out there could post a photo of the 1st model, it would be appreciated.

Hi,

No, it's not Mission Impossible to get a photo. However, the 1.st version is very scarse and this is the ony "official photo" I know of.

Here is a photo of the set that once belonged to Stan Willis. Now in another collector's collection. A very nice cuff indeed.

You're welcome Glenn. I have no clue and I doubt there is such information avaiable.
The Phelps are rare but the first version is much rarer. I only know of two in collections.

Thanks Lars for posting your pic of this cuff.

I had a lot of trouble with Photobucket and had tried for days to get this photo posted, so it is a bit redundant for me to post a pic of the same cuff.

This cuff was one of the first that I wanted to see when I first visited Stan.
I was very, very pleased to have acquired it when he sold off his collection.

Thank you both for posting.

So the only two differences that I can see is that the 1st modal has a much more rounded lock case and the key hole position is at 12 o'clock instead of 5 o'clock. The chain, bows and clevis appear to be the same.

The Adams was patented in 1862 and the Phelps in 1866, when was the Tower Bottom key made? I know it was designed partially from the Phelps patent, but how long after?
