Unusual End Lock

Hi All,

I recently acquired this End Lock & wondered if anyone had any information on why they were made or how they worked?
As you can see, they don't have the usual hole for a chain. I haven't been able to get the end cap off & wonder if there may have been a special tool. Any ideas?

Looks very interesting, might be worth trying to gently tap the collar to see if you can remove it. Looking forward to seeing it when we meet up next month.

Thanks for the tip Chris, I tried what you suggested & voilà.
My new theory is that it is an unfinished end lock, think the dimple my be there to centre the hole to be drilled. What do you think?

You certainly have an unusual find. I have quite a few end locks and have never seen anything like it.
Are there any markings of any kind?

Hi Joe,
I have examined them closely and no makers name or markings. The finish is still quite rough which would go with the theory of them being unfinished. I can not get the cuff to open more than about 2mm, it's soaking in WD40 so may get it working in a couple of days.

I also have a few of the Cap Wrist Locks and I agree that it looks unfinished. It also seems to show that they drill the Cap and the wrist lock at the same time so the holes line up. But I guess they could drill them separately and file them to be the same. Anyway, it is a nice find and I wonder why it was never finished. If it opens 2mm just keep working it and it will open up little by little.

That would make sense to assemble the rough castings, drill the hole then finish and polish them. Hopefully with a bit of patience you will be able to loosen the cuff so it opens.

Take a look at Dick Norman's Modern HC Secrets for Magicians. Page 71; there's a J.M. Trackwell Shackle Pat April 4, 1882 Pat #268,171 Looks like it uses a special pair of pliers to affix the cuff. I could swear I've seen another photo or representation of a cuff that uses a pair of pliers with a tooth (like a hole punch) to fix the slide-off collar to hold it closed. If I remember what or where that might be I'll post the link.
