I have a curiosity. There are many people here who collect handcuffs. What do you collect yours for? Do you have occupational use for them? Do you only only display them on a wall or something? Do you occasionally wear them for maybe seconds or minites or more because you like to feel them while they are on your wrists rather than only keep them stored somewhere?

This very much, interests my curiosity. Some people's collections may be little more than hoarding and never looking at, using or anything with them once they have them, while others want them for what ever is their reason.

Since I have stopped collecting I think I can say that it was a mild curiosity due to an interest in Houdini. At one point, my focus changed, and I stopped collecting the modern ones - which is a sign that you are developing a larger knowledge base, this is true for whatever you are collecting.
The chief reason I quit collecting was the simple issue of storage for something that weighs a lot when the collection gets too big. Whats left is all old non swing through cuffs that I am having a display case made to hold them. The second reason I dumped the hobby was the constant bombardment of bondage comments and jokes from people who assumed the wrong thing.

I understand about the jokes and bondage comments. Unfortunately when I see handcuffs I either think of police or bondage and if I see someone else with some my mind does wonder. But while I keep my modest collection private secluded away, if it ever became known I collect them, I would brush off people's comments. If its something for which I get enjoyment from, then to hell with what other people say about it.

Personally my interest is in modern ones, comparing the design, security, function, keys, pickability, shimmability and just enjoying the look and feel of them. So for myself more info would not broaden my interest to older ones because I specifically like modern things, new better technology things.

An interesting question that I don't believe was ever asked here before.
In fact, it seems to be a question that collectors don't even ask much when in person.

For me, it was the Houdini connection.
In the 5th grade, I read my first Houdini book and I was hooked.
My neighbor was an IRS special agent and I worked him until he finally brought his cuff home.
I knew I was destined to be a cuff collector.
Other than the 29 cent cuffs that one could get in the toy isle at the supermarket, my first cuff were the cheap Takeda copy's from a novelty company. They lasted about a week. Cheap crap. My friends dad was a cop and he got my a pair of PIC cuffs.

Then came Towers, Cavenys, Mattatucks, and more. Then came the rarest of the rare.

No interest in the bedroom and my (at the time) wife took the brunt of the sexual innuendo jokes.
I always told people that I wanted her hands free, anyway.

I keep all the cuffs in a big safe but always think of making a cuff room just like some of the superb collections I have seen in Chicago, Germany, Holland and Ohio.

It is always nice to bring some cuffs to the lock shows and let the fellow collectors handle them or compare with theirs.

I rarely try them on. If they are unusual, I might put them on to see if they are uncomfortable or if they will fit at all.
I always try on my Houdini owned cuffs as that is always a thrill to acquire any of his.

Other than that, I like having them and learning about them. Some have been a good investment and some have not.

I definitely have more fun with this hobby than I ever did while collecting coins.

Ever since I was a kid I liked locks and keys and what not. Also handcuffs. I was into lock picking long ago but got out of it and when I picked it back up I remembered about handcuffs. So I started to buy some. I get on phases of buying certain things and then not buying for a while. I just like them for how they look and feel. Makes me think sometimes of all the dangerous people who may have been in cuffs just like these, an interesting thought to then experience how limiting they are or how uncomfortable.

I mainly also am into modern cuffs but I don't discount the possibility that in time when I have my own place I may have more storage capacity to have older, heavier things and the privacy to not care about ordering things to the door.

For me it started when i was a kid playing cops and robbers my grandad having a old set of hiatts that belonged to his uncle a sargent for wiltshire police and watching the bill. Seeing them with hiatt speedcuffs and the fact i wanted to be a police officer i just had to have them cuffs. However i could not find any the closest i could get was a set of folding cuffs. Kind of giving up after this as i could not find any and by this time knew i was never going to make it into the force i fogot about cuffs for a few years. Then i turned 18 and descovered ebay so just out of intrest i thought i would have a look and see if i coupd find the cuffs i knew nothing about apart from the police used them. I found them and after getting them i noticed the chain version that i know prison service used so i brought these aswell. So getting them i was curious as to what else could be brought. Having a intrest in american history ww1 ww2 capone era wildwest and so on i found a pair of peerless this i though was amazimg that i could have some cuffs used by american poilce and the history behind them so from there i was hooked started looking on the net and came across this site which just opened a new world to me so for that thankyou. Reading posts and seeing all the pics this is when i knew i could stick at this and build a collection something im working on now only pain being for me is finding all these good american cuffs in uk at a good price as p+p now from us is rather dear and alot of the time as much as the cuff. Because of this site i know hove a intrest in houdini and lock picking somthing i am very new at but hoping to get good at in the years to come. So i dont as such have a intrest in one thing just a few that meet at cuffs.
