Lockpicking and Handcuffs

I had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman who calls himself Deviant Ollam when I presented a workshop at the LockCon held in Seattle a couple of years ago. Deviant is the author of the finest book on lockpicking which I have ever seen. The title is "Practical Lock Picking", if anyone is interested, and it can be bought from Amazon, off eBay, or from various other sources. But be advised that this book does NOT deal with picking handcuff locks. Generally speaking, handcuff locks are so ridiculously simple that they just don't interest any of the hard-hitters in the lockpicking community.

Dev is such a good guy.

What I would like to say is picking Smith & Wesson is easy. Other brands are not as easy. Even picking Peerless is not as easy and TCH/HIATT/Safariland/Alcyon are not easy either. Doable but you need to bend things in different ways and shapes. If you bend a tool to open Smith & Wesson as most people show you, good luck picking any other brand that has multiple pawls or alternative angled keyways.

Sorry but this is pure bollocks. Pardon my french. You could not be more wrong. Some people kill people with hammers, Does that make all carpenters killers? No. Some criminals lockpick handcuffs open, so do many hobby pickers.

You know, the guy who a made a living by performing escape acts including those from a variety of cuffs and even jail cells! He should spend some time Googling and reading Houdini articles!!

"Dingoes Ate My Baby" was the name of Oz' band in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". I always thought it was a great title, even though it was a rather cruel exercise in sardonic humor, based as it was on a truly tragic criminal case in Australia. A family was on a camping trip and the infant daughter disappeared. The mother was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, in spite of her insistence that the baby had been stolen and eaten by dingoes. The poor mother served several years in prison before she was completely exonerated and released.
