Great job Joe, I was lucky enough to get one of the listed items. Let's hope 2017 turns up some interesting items. It is very interesting to look back over the years and I noticed in 2007 a pair of Griffin & Nichols cuffs fetched $2840 think they are now in your collection. I know that Dan picked up a similar pair last month, I will contact him and try to get him to post a picture.

Chris - The Griffin & Nichols Darby is one of my favorites. It is two hundred years old, but in beautiful condition. I have seen a somewhat similar Hiatt cuff, but I have never seen a Griffin Darby. I wonder if he ever made one.

It is hard to tell but I think I have 6 of the great items shown above.

I am honored to be the recipient of the Handcuff of the Year Award -- 2016.
Thanks to those who guided me in my decision to purchase that as it was a large amount and some of
the posting pictures indicated that it was damaged and/or worked on.
It is a beautiful cuff in its original state with original key and in perfect working condition with strong stampings and springs.

Had trouble posting due to photo bucket, but hopefully this works. Got the Darby's, but they are only marked Griffin! They have a sleeve on one cuff that I can't work out. It is well made, so I can only assume it was made for a prisoner with one small hand or as a repair. Will not know without removing. Also got the bar cuff marked Yorkshire.

They look great Dan. The Griffin Darby must be the oldest known documented Darby cuff and must date before about 1818. Will be interested to see them and hopefully between us we might be able to shed some light on the sleeve.
Looking again at the 2007 auction, the Darby cuffs with the side keyhole look very unusual, do we know if they snap shut, wonder what came first the screw key or the side key?

Hello all and Happy New Year.

In my own collection I have a pair of cap wrist irons linked by a very old padlock that I believe was likely made by the same smith that made the side key Darby cuffs mentioned earlier.

Also, I am quite certain that this unusual side key end lock is much older that the wrist irons I have it locked between.

I made a key for it and it is fully functional. Earlier someone had asked if the side key Darby snaps shut and although I cannot answer that I can state this side key end lock does indeed snap shut.

It is equipped with a very powerful spring indeed!
